About  John Hook

John Hook was also known as Jack Hook, Flash Jack,Tieki Huka, Flashy Jack, Captain Hook and Black Jack. John Hook was born in England in 1810 and died at The Spit, Ahuriri, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1870 John Hook came to Mahia, Te Hoe, as a whaler.

One history says the name "Hook" was adopted when he came to New Zealand.
It suggests that his name was
John Hooks and that he came to NZ as a member of the
58th Rutlandshire Regiment, England. This could have some basis in fact, as I grew up knowing that William Peakman and John Hook were 'old mates'. (William too served in the British army) John Hook's army career was a long one. (Research about this is in progress)

John Hook married TePaea Newa Rapa in 1835 at Wairoa, HB, NZ. Children

Origins of John Hook

I have no idea of the parentage of John Hook. I have family stories in my head, however they are not definitive. The story of John coming from Essex, the story of the name in fact being Dalton.  I cannot substantiate that  but these things are part of the 'old memory', and cannot be discounted. John Hook was a seafarer and a Captain of a boat. Whose boat though I have no idea.

From the military records,
John Hooks was a career soldier, and may have spent time in India and South Africa. I also know the Hooks were especially fond of horses and may have owned a number at some stage.
