| Brief Description...... As with IKARUGA, RADIANT SILVERGUN is not your common or garden shoot em up, despite what the screenshots may suggest, this game has both beauty and depth. The fundamental game mechanic is, much like any great shooter, to power up your ship and kill everything that comes on the screen. However, like IKARUGA, there is so much more to this game than simply killing stuff that you will end up investing huge chunks of your time in eeking out all of the subtle layers of greatness that this game has to offer. Gameplay........ First things first, this game is HARD. Not R-TYPE hard or even GRADIUS hard, no this game is supremely difficult and will require your undivided attention and concentration if you are going to get anywhere. Yet this is not a bad thing as it is in so many other games. This game is not unfair, if you die it is because YOU made a mistake not because the game created the conditions of your demise. In fact, the game is so hardcore that to get an entry to the highscore table you are only allowed to use 1 credit, by taking up the offer of the first continue you automatically exclude yourself from entry into the hall of highscores. But don't let this put you off, the slow path to success is a fun and rewarding one. The level structures are lovingly thought out, the control system, whilst a little baffling at first, soon becomes second nature and you will find it perfectly balanced and exquisitely responsive. The speed of your ship is spot on and the rate of auto fire is ridiculous.Silvergun, forces you to learn enemy patterns and level layouts firstly just to survive and, eventually, to move to the higher shooting plane of playing for points and bonuses. |
