LIVING GREEN IN DOMINICA

ORGANIC FARMS AND GARDENS DIRECTORY
|
“These sprays, dusts,
and aerosols are now applied almost universally to farms, gardens, forests,
and homes — nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect,
the “good” and the “bad,” to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish
in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in
soil — all this though the intended target may be only a few weeds or
insects. Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons
on the surface of the earth without making it unfit for all life? They should
not be called “insecticides,” but “biocides.””
-
Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, 1962
We developed this page to promote the small “roots”
farmers who do not use chemicals on their gardens. The following farmers
claim they do not use chemical insecticides, herbicides or fertilizers.
There are some organic certification programs in Dominica but many are priced above the average Dominican
small farmer. I find this to be a problem with organic certification
everywhere.

Anronat
Farm
|
I leave this listing in memory of Mr. Andrew
Royer, well known throughout the Caribbean for his promotion of organic agriculture and sustainable
living as well as the small farmer. In 1981 he was awarded a silver medal
by the FAO for his work in food production. His farm was a training center
to people from all over the world and one of the few places in Dominica where you could see biogas production in
operation. Unfortunately the farm is not open for farm tours or sales at
this time, but I wanted to recognize Mr. Royer for his tireless
efforts in promoting organic agriculture over the years.
