Photos of Venice--the one in Italy

This page may take a while to load. You have been warned.

These pictures were taken in Venice, in February of 2001. I thought I ought to go there before it sinks.

The Rialto Bridge
The Piazza San Marco, as seen from the top of the Campanile
Door to a synagogue in the Jewish Quarter
Nice Non-English Speaking Man Who Let Me Take His Picture. I am reasonably certain this is a costume, but you never know.
I took this from the back of a vaporetto right after my sister said "This is really beautiful, but I can't wait to get home and smell Portland."
The Cemetary Island

An Egg with Legs Hangs out at the Glass Museum on Murano

The Aforementioned Campanile
Venice. Gondolas. Cliched, I know. Deal with it.
Thanks to John Van De Loo in Belgium, for identifying the Fontego de Turchi Palace. I had no idea what it was--other than simply fabulous--when I took the picture.

What did I learn on my trip to Venice?

Penne is Italian for a type of small tubular pasta, and Spanish for "penis". Order appropriately.
My sister has curious neighbors who embarrass easily.
If you don't want to look like a tourist in Europe, bring your cell phone. Use it frequently, on public transportation, and speak as loudly as possible.
Getting there is NOT half the fun.
Theodore Roosevelt's pool table is warped. Apparently, Teddy's estate gave it to a marine biology research institute on Long Island, where it was placed under the cold-water pipes in the basement.
Charles de Gaulle/Roissy airport is Europe's Detroit airport. Everything is gray and filthy--the walls, the floors, the air.
Alcoholic beverages are free on transatlantic flights.
Rugby players can often tell you which bone someone has broken by the sound it makes.
