It's Poochie, that's who! In the early 1980s, Poochie was introduced by Mattel. She was a poodle with hot pink hair and purple sunglasses, who worked as an advice columnist whenever her owner was away. Poochie items were mostly plush animals or stationery sets, although there were tons of other items that held her image...such as bed linens, curtains, craft kits, coloring books, and vanity items. Although she was once one popular pooch here in North America, Poochie had perhaps her greatest marketing success in Italy and other parts of Europe. It is not uncommon today to find Poochie items mint in packages that are written in Italian! Poochie is virtually unheard of now, and her items, although inexpensive, are rather hard to find. This page is dedicated to some of my Poochie collection, which I have managed to amass by sheer luck. Poochie was a huge part of my 80s childhood. It is my hope that this page may help her find a few new fans, and keep her alive in the hearts of those that already know and love her!
Two of my favorites! I found the mint condition Poochie Stamper with all 3 of her original ink stampers and the yellow plastic base at the Salvation army for 25 cents. She was the first thing I saw when I stepped in the door, and I snapped her off the shelf as though I thought she might disappear in front of me! :) The plush is a 6 inch North American Poochie Plush. American Poochie plushes came in 6 inch, 9inch, and 12 inch plushes, and are made of soft fake fur. Note: The British version Poochie plushes are made out of a more felty type of plush material than American ones, and have a flat face and pink posey flowers on the soles of the feet. British Poochies came in sizes as large as 32 inches!
The Poochie trinket box in this picture came all the way from Canada to live with me! ^.^ Mattel made several different types of Poochie "trinket" boxes, all made of hard pink plastic. Some boxes had a thick white nylon cord attatched at the top. These "carrying cases" included stuff such as tooth brush holders, plastic combs, tissue holders and accessories. The trinket box shown would have carried Poochie stickers and stationary goods such as pencils and erasers.
Poochie items weren't just limited to plush animals and stationary sets. Poochie also had paper dolls, custom Poochie crayons, enameled jewelry, playsets, vanity items, drinking cups, and even colorforms all created in her image. She even had her own card game, as shown in the picture! In the card game, players attempt to build a long stretch of rope. You could play as either Poochie, or her boyfriend, Fastball. :)
Poochie/Luno on VHS----45 minutes. Poochie and her android assistant Hermes embark on an adventure to Cairo, Egypt where she helps save a young boy and his archeologist father. This movie shows Poochie at her best! See below for the theme song lyrics! ~.^ This VHS has bonus footage of tv cartoon Luno, a poorly animated series which never really took off.
I found this Poochie lettering kit in a bargain bin at an antique store! The kit has a mirror, and tons of little rubber stampers within.
Poochie had several story books. She had hardcover and soft cover editions, and even a series of Little Golden books such as this one: Poochie and Lickrish. In most of her books, Poochie was shown wearing a red sweatshirt along with her purple sunglasses and pink heart collar, which is interesting since the red sweatshirt is seldom pictured on any of her toy items.
I am always looking for more things Poochie! If you have any Poochie the pink earred dog items that you wish to sell, please contact me with pictures asap!
All of the items shown on this page are from my personal collection and are not for sale.
POOCHIE the Special: theme song lyrics Poochie, is it really you? Sitting at the top knowing what to do Poochie, now I understand-- how you're always there with a helping hand. Oh boy, it's not so far away I know you'll be there come one day Poochie is it really you...
As with most Saturday morning cartoon/movie cross overs, a separate theme song was created for the television shows, specials, and the movie release.
These stuffed plush are called Poochie Pals. The original Poochie Pal hang tag reads: A Poochie for you, one for a friend--express how you feel about your favorite activity. Poochie Pals are approximately 6-7inches tall; plush bodied with foam rubber faces. They were made in Korea, starting in 1983. There were four Poochie Pals, each one dressed for a different hobbie: I love Cheerleading, I love (Aerobic) Dancing, I love Jogging, and I love Slumber Parties. Aerobic Dancing Poochie came in a pink and purple striped leotard complete with leg warmers. Slumber Party Poochie wore a blue night shirt. Cheerleading and Jogging Poochies are shown on the left.
Shown front left to right: "I love Cheerleading" Poochie, with her purple mini skirt, pink shirt, and original hangtag still attatched. Beside her is "I love Jogging" Poochie, in her purple running shorts and pink top.
