GERMAN NATIONAL ANTHEM

DEUTSCHLANDLIED
DAS LIED DER DEUTSCHEN
DEUTSCHLAND BER ALLES
LYRICS - TEXTE
Text: Heinrich Hoffmann von
Fallersleben (1798-1874)
Melodie: Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
Deutschland,
Deutschland ber alles,
ber alles in der Welt,
Wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
Brderlich zusammenhlt,
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt
|: Deutschland, Deutschland ber alles,
ber alles in der Welt :|
Deutsche Frauen,
deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten schnen Klang,
Uns zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang.
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang. :|
Einigkeit und Recht
und Freiheit
Fr das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lat uns alle streben
Brderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Glckes Unterpfand.
|: Blh' im Glanze dieses Glckes,
Blhe, deutsches Vaterland. :|
DISCLAIMER
According to the German government, only the third stranza of the Deutschlandlied is considered the "national anthem". But nowhere it says that it is unlawful to sing the whole song. The song was written in the 18th century and wished German unification that only occurred in 1871 under the rule of Bismarck. It has nothing to do with the Nazi regime.
The beginning of the German-hymn is considered as presumptuous by the younger generation today: "Germany, above all else in the world".
It would be dreadful if we were to fall from one extreme to the other, from arrogance to an inferiority complex.
Even Brecht, the internationalist, admonished "If only you would trust yourself" and why shouldn't we once again assent to the last verse of the German-hym "Flourish, German fatherland".
All jubilant patriotism has abated in Germany. We no longer feel the pathos of the Wars of Liberation, it seems laughable to us. The older generation is more moved by Hlderlin's entreaty "Oh sacred heart of the people, oh fatherland!" But one does not have to use the term fatherland for what one thinks and feels when one considers oneself to be a member of the family, a community or society, a country, a nation.

The history of the German National State (in 1945) has come to an end, not the history of the Germans.
