Strike the Root Review

Strike the Root receives a libertarian index rating of 10.

Rob governs his website by the Henry David Thoreau quote, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."

And strike at the root they shall. Rob and company are not interested in the standard fare of pseudo-libertarian sites, i.e., pandering to conservatives or arguing that drugs and porn are "good" for society (and that's why they should be legal). No, here you will find columnists attacking the basic framework and idea of government. The idea is not to get people to question what the government should do but rather whether the government should exist at all.

And of course, the answer is no. Strike the Root is a market anarchist site, and even if some of the columnists are not full-fledged anarcho-capitalists, Rob allows no positive utterances of government here. As he says in the submission guidelines, "please do not submit any columns that promote the political process, a political party, voting, 'good government,' or the Constitution."

Strike the Root columnists offer a wide array of attack on evil. Evil being, of course, the State. Scrolling down the long list of columnists one will recognize names from other hardcore libertarian sites like Lewrockwell.com and Anti-state.com. Many of them have a training in Austrian economics, and it shows up in some of the columns (even if that training is just having read a book or two by Mises or Rothbard.) Also, the columnists have a wide variety of interests, so many original angles are taken.

The webpage carries not only daily columns but also links to off-site news and columns. However, these are secondary in importance to the brilliant original material on the site. A forum is provided if you wish to discuss any of the columns or anything else topical. Strike the Root is one of the top libertarian sites around, and I rank it as a necessary site to check every day.
