HISTORY:
The Civil Air Patrol was first started a week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  Concerned civilians banded together to patrol the nation's coastline in airplanes.  Quickly, this task expanded to defending U.S. ships against enemy subs.  In fact, during WWII, CAP planes sunk two enemy submarines.  Later, in 1943, the Civil Air Patrol was made part of the Army Air Corps.  Today, it is the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and supports three main missions:  Emergency Services, Cadet Programs, and Aerospace Education.

WHAT IS EMERGENCY SERVICES?
Emergency Services focuses on areas such as search and rescue, disaster relief, blood and tissue transportation, and aerial reconnaissance for homeland security.

WHAT IS CADET PROGRAMS?
The goal of Cadet Programs is to create leaders out of our nation's youth by focusing on areas such as moral leadership, aerospace, physical fitness, teamwork, emergency services, and others.

WHAT IS AEROSPACE EDUCATION?
Aerospace Education includes two facets:  internal and external.  Internal education teaches CAP members about aerospace.  External concentrates on informing the general public about aerospace in order to gain their appreciation of the industry.

WHO CAN JOIN?
Individuals aged 12-18 years can join as cadets.  Those 18 and over may join as senior members.

HOW DO I JOIN?
If you live in the Lapeer area, the Lapeer Composite Squadron urges you to stop by at one of their squadron meetings.  Meetings occur at the Lapeer DuPont Airport (1232 Roods Lake Road) in the upstairs room and last from 6:30 to 8:30 PM every Thursday.  If you do not reside in or near Lapeer, please see one of our links to locate a squadron near you.

QUICK FACTS:
*The Civil Air Patrol has more than 64,000 members.  27,000 of these are cadets.
*95 percent of all inland search and rescue missions are performed by the Civil Air Patrol.
*Civil Air Patrol members save 100 lives each year.
*10 percent of the entering freshman class for the USAF Academy every year are former Civil Air Patrol cadets.

SO, WHAT'S IN CAP FOR CADETS?
*Those who pursue training and become qualified may serve on a number of positions on a real search and rescue mission.
*Encampments are camps that may include an orientation to military life, flights in aircraft, an obstacle course, drill, team sports, and numerous other activities all within a team setting.
*Those who attend an encampment may later apply to a number of special activities including Flight Academy, International Air Cadet Exchange, Blue Beret (helping out at the Oshkosh fly-in), Pararescue Course, Cadet Officer School, and many others.
*Cadets may work towards achievements that earn them grades (airman, staff sergeant, captain, etc.) similar to those held in the actual Air Force.
*Many scholarships are available for cadets who choose to pursue college degrees and/or flight training.
*Many cadet members hold leadership positions--such as cadet commander, first sergeant, and element leader--within their squadrons.
*Cadets learn and regularly participate in activities such as drill, team sports, uniform inspections (yes, CAP members do get to wear the Air Force uniforms), radio training, orientation flights, colorguard, model rocketry, moral leadership discussions, navigation exercises, trips to airshows and aviation museums, and much more.

WHAT DO SENIOR MEMBERS GET TO DO?
*Many seniors serve on leadership positions to mentor the cadet members and help the organization function smoothly.
*Senior members may become qualified to perform various duties on search and rescue missions, aid in disaster relief, transport tissues and blood, and fly counterdrug missions.
*Senior members are also needed to fly orientation flights for cadets, drive cadets to activities, and supervise cadets.
*Training is offered in the areas of safety, communicatoins, aerospace, public affairs, administration, finance, history, logistics, and much more.

IS ANY SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED TO JOIN CAP?
Absolutely not!  Although we welcome pilots and other individuals who can bring a variety of special skills to our organization, no prior knowledge or training of any kind is required.

CAN FAMILIES JOIN CAP?
Of course!  CAP is structured so that parents and their children can work together to achieve Civil Air Patrol's goals.

WHAT OTHER MEMBERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE?
Adults may choose to simply provide financial support for a squadron.  Parents of cadets may also wish to act as cadet sponsors--members whose only duties are to supervise and transport cadets to various activities.
