Who Are We?-
The Lambda Trampers and Lambda Lattes are social tramping and walking groups for gays & lesbians & their friends. Most of us live in and around Christchurch, New Zealand, but we sometimes get visitors from overseas joining us for tramps. All ages are welcome. The Lambda Trampers go on day tramps of varying difficulty, while the Lambda Lattes go on shorter walks of about 2 hours, and usually have a coffee at the end!.

Where To Meet-
The Lambda Trampers meet on the steps at the corner of Peterborough and Montreal Streets, Christchurch.
Please note starting time carefully; cars will depart promptly!

The Lambda Lattes meet at the start of each walk –see the schedule for details. As with the Lambda Trampers, please note starting times carefully, as the walk will depart promptly!

What’s required for your safety, every time you go tramping:
Lambda trampers: Bring lunch, water, warm clothing (woollen or polypropylene), gloves, hats and sunscreen. Strong footwear and a waterproof jacket are essential, also bring any personal medical items. It is a condition of tramping with us that you are properly equipped, because if you are inadequately prepared you put everyone, not just yourself, at risk. River crossings are potentially the most dangerous part of a days tramp. Mountain Safety regulations strongly advise trampers NOT to remove their boots when crossing rivers/streams and if you’re going on one of the tramps that has river crossings, bring a change of clothes/socks/towel. We have a number of First Aid kits and it is the leaders responsibility that at least one of those kits is held by a tramper on any given trip. For details about who has got a FA kit, ring Helen or Henry.

Lambda Lattes: Bring warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, water and some money for a drink at the end.

What does "LAMBDA" mean?-

In the 60's when Gay Liberation began to emerge as an organised movement after the famous Stonewall Riots, the "Lambda" was selected as the symbol of Gay rights.

In ancient times the Lambda came to represent the balance needed in the relationship between people & the society  they lived in; justice, freedom, equality and independence of the individual.

Lambda is the 11th lower case of the Greek alphabet, and is the forerunner of our letter "L". Originally the letter was a picture symbol for the scales often seen being carried by the figure of justice.

The Romans saw the shape of the Lambda as suggestive of a flame and used it as a symbol for "Lampas", their Latin word for torch and because of this connection in more recent times, scientists used the symbol to represent the wave length of light.

Today the Lambda is recognized as a unique symbol for Gay Rights, for sexual liberation, for justice and enlightenment, as well as for a needed balance in acceptance of the differences within all humanity.
