When Kermit (aka Vanessa) introduced us all to Cinnabun Jr., we knew it was meant to be that the NBF go to towards the surgery to help his hind leg deformity. All the LL members felt very strongly about this special needs bun because of his likeness to Cinnabun's (aka Clara) own bunny Cinnabun and his handicap similar to Finn's. We are so happy Vanessa shared his story with us! Read more about Cinnabun Jr.:

Cinnabun is a 3 and 1/2 month old Holland lop baby boy. He lived in Livermore. He was bought at a feed store in Alamo and lived in a hutch outside. One night, he escaped from his hutch and crawled out under the fence. The next morning the family found Cinnabun lying injured in the gutter. They picked him up, put him back in his hutch and left him alone in over 100 degree weather. Nearly two days later, they realized that they needed advice, because it seemed that Cinnabun might be paralyzed. His legs were sticking out at funny angles and he was in distress. When the family said they did not want to treat Cinnabun, or take him to be euthanized, they were advised to surrender him, so that he could be given pain medicine and evaluated on whether his condition required humane euthanasia or if he could be treated. The family said they were unable to afford a donation towards Cinnabun's care at that time. Cinnabun was examined at VCA in Oakland by Dr. Carolynn Harvey and Dr. Michele Kim--two incredibly compassionate and knowledgeable vets. He had a luxated left hip---meaning it was out of the socket. It was recommended to anesthetize Cinnabun and try to put his hip back in place. The risk was bleeding and possible blood clots. The hip was put back in place, but soon dislocated again and needs surgical correction. Cinnabun also "degloved" his tail and so his tail needed to be amputated. X-rays show Cinnabun has multiple fractures in his pelvis, and a lot of bruising in the groin. But more importantly, his right back leg is fractured above the growth plate. This is serious and may require future amputation; however, the potentially good news is that, the growth plate itself may not have been injured, so there is a chance that with surgery the leg can heal. The estimated cost for the surgery is $1500 to $2000, because it requires an orthopedic specialist. There is no guarantee that the surgery will work, but this is the recommendation from several vets whom we greatly trust Donations for his care would be wonderful and gratefully appreciated. Any amount--large or small will help care for Cinnabun. Special rescue cases like this require extensive funding and dramatically impact our ability to rescue other rabbits in need. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation towards Cinnabun's extensive care, you can do so via Paypal on our website or by snail mail to: SaveABunny-SF Marin House Rabbit Society P.O. Box 2143 Mill Valley, CA 94942 Thank you very much in advance for your interest and help for little Cinnabun. Cinnabun is a real trooper. Perhaps it seems silly, but we are thrilled that he is eating, peeing and pooping like a bunny should. He is a very happy, sweet bunny who charms everyone he meets!

07/07/05 UPDATE:

Here's Cinnabun Jr. in his cast following his surgery

The following is an email from Marcy Schaaf, Chapter Manager at SaveABunny San Francisco/ Marin House Rabbit Society:

Hi Everyone, I wanted to update you on Cinnabun and the news from UC Davis. I spent the entire day at UC Davis yesterday seeking all possible options for Cinnabun, getting new x-rays and blood work done for him. Unfortunately, it looks like Cinnabun has now lost all sensation in his broken right leg, likely a result of nerve damage. I saw the x-rays and he has multiple fractures with bones jutting out in several places. The surgeon did not feel that the leg could be repaired and recommended amputation. Cinnabun's tail was already amputated. His left hip is still dislocated and will likely not be able to be put back in place. Since Cinnabun is a young rabbit, he likely will be able to be mobile with the hip as it is. The vet recommendation was to first amputate the right leg and leave the left one alone for now. So, after consulting with Dr. Carolynn Harvey and factoring in the estimated cost for surgery at UC Davis versus VCA, the distance to and from Davis, and the unfortunate news that the UC Davis doctors did not feel that any special surgery could really be done for Cinnabun other than amputation, I made the decision to bring Cinnabun back home with me, rather than have the surgery done at UC Davis. They would not have been able to operate on him for nearly two days. I felt that he would be more comfortable with us in our home and foster center. So now, we are working on having the amputation done at VCA next week, and also one other possible option in Southern California. Please forgive my lack of personalization and any duplication of these emails. I am working on thank you notes and even if you don't hear from me immediately, please know that I am tremendously grateful for your support and generosity to help Cinnabun. I am doing my best to help Cinnabun and coordinate his care, as well as juggling many other rescues and emergencies in the Bay area, in addition to the daily management of our busy foster center. Be sure to visit our website www.saveabunny.com to see all the bunnies in need of loving homes. Volunteers are also always welcome and greatly appreciated.

With deep gratitude,

Rabbit Haven's Chelsea

Our third Needy Bun Fund recipient!

With Easter 2005 approaching, the LL moderators decided it was time to put the money sitting in the LL fund to use! Quite a few rabbits were nominated and a poll was held! Chelsea stole our hearts, and we can only hope that our donation will help her path to recovery. When The Rabbit Haven's director was contacted informing her of Chelsea's nomination, we recieved this email back detailing Chelsea's experiences:

Dear bunny friends:

Thank you for nominating precious Chelsea- she is a darling, loving lop girl and she is currently in foster care with Elizabeth in Santa Cruz County. Chelsea has made it through some tough times. We will get more pictures soon. I coudl not bear to photograph her when she first came in. Her first injuries were a dislocated jaw which we had repaired, infection, and trauma, facial abrasions, adn cuts to her face adn head. She was so frightened. When we first met her she was so traumatized and hurting, she has improved so much already, now this last insult her front tooth root had also been damaged her other injures were so severe that had not been noticed.

This beautiful girl made it through months of medicines, treatments and surgery and then she developed another infection - x rays showed that when she was hit in the face that her front tooth was apparently damaged Her front tooth root dislodged and the root actually changed position and grew in sideways. Her front tooth is infected - we are now trying to get her well enough to get her next surgery. That tooth & root will need to come out. However she needs to be a lot stronger for this to be done. We are determined to help her be 100% well! for now she just finished a round of injectable special antibiotics and has stabilized. We have also discovered that it is difficult for her to swallow many foods - more damage! I just feel so upset to think of her suffering. She is trying so hard and has even made a friend with another of our rescues a boy with a back leg that is disfunctional - Non the less, he carries it with him everywhere and the vet says - well that is just the way it is. teh vet thinks based on x rays that the leg injury happen to him when he was very young adn it just healed that way / He is healthy anyway so we're leaving that leg alone. He really can get around with that leg. He even uses it to stand on, balancing in his special way. He loves Chelsea too! He's found a friend.

She has many loving rescue and bunny assistance people watching over her and one vet who is helping Her next stop will be to go to a big clinic in Oakland VCA and see Dr Harvey who can tell us more of what is possible for this little lop girl -We will get more pictures and send to you.

Please send your get well wishes to the special needs bunnygirl - I cannot comprehend how anyone could have harmed a bunny with such cruelty. She has been through enough. We are determined we will help her with whatever she needs to be 100% well so she can have her forever home with kind people. She is so deserving of this. We love her.

Love to you and thank you for thinking of Chelsea

4/28/05 UPDATE:

Hello-

Yes! Gloria the bookkeeper told me when received it last week and tagged 500 to Chelsea's account ! thank you so much -I could just kiss every one of you It makes such a tremendous difference to us to have 500.00 - Her expenses were much more so it really is a big deal! Given the gravity of her injury we have needed to proceed very slowly in her treatment. She was badly injured. Her infection had spread and it is hard to control it to a point where she can make it through the next surgery. Chelsea is doing much better and still needs to be monitored for infection control -she may need a second round of injections Likely will in that her cough returned last week. bummer ) : However the first injection series seemed very effective and she was so much better playing and jumping all over What an doll! Once her infection is under control (enough) we can proceed with the tooth removal. What a struggle. But Chelsea is very happy and she has two people interested in adopting her. We are so happy for her and thankful to you.

Please reassure the lagomorphs lounge group that 100% of the money for Chelsea did indeed go to her care. None of us are paid and medical bills are the primary expense. Each foster site covers their own food, hay and veggie bills.

Hercules, the little baby who cam in off the streets of Watsonville is doing better too. He finally gained enough strength to have his surgery -It turned out to be an injury to his jaw and he had to have 5 molars removed ! His tooth sockets were completely infected to the bone. What a strong boy he is. His surgery was over one hour! He'll still have another surgery later but not until he is totally removed - these dental problems are horrific., He's beautiful and so loving.

Tonight we just took in a tiny white dwarf found in the "woods" likely some idiot dumped her to set her "free" ...gurrr She had been attacked and has a ripped eye and injured ears.l but she is safe now. She is right t in my bedroom. She ahs already started her treatments. I hope I can save her eye.

We are looking for a great name for her...Ask the group if they have a sweet powerful and perfect name for her. OK?

thanks again to you and your wonderful group

Love to you

BCRR & Action for Animals in Distress'
60 Homeless Buns

Our second Needy Bun Fund recipient!

One of the LL rabbit board's bunnynators received this email from a fellow rabbit rescuer/adoption coordinator in the BC area:

Hi,

I received a call this w/e about bunnies - this is the first day that I've been able to stop crying btw. Initially I was all excitied thinking the woman might want to adopt or foster a bunny. Well as it turns out she asked if I wanted some bunnies. I asked why and she said...........because I have about 60. All 3 months or younger.

Apparently her husband got her a 2nd bun at Easter and now they've had about 4 or 5 litters. They thought theirs looked lonely.

She mentioned there was a place in Richmond to set them free or that she can sell them to King Ed Pet Center for $5 each. My heart sank and I begged her to do neither. She also said she's been giving them to the neighbourhood kids. Again I begged her not to give them out in pairs and be very careful who gets them.

I have no idea how to handle this one but I have been trying to come up with some sort of strategy.

Myself and a few others need to go there to sex them and seperate them. I was thinking all the girls can stay together for the time being and I need to work on trying to place the boys into foster or into shelters where they won't be killed. If they all go in at once, some will definitely be pts. I don't think I can bear looking into the faces of baby bunnies knowing some will die.

Does anyone have any ideas? property, cages.....anything?

Thanks
Lisa

After reading Lisa's story, many LL members knew they had found their next Needy Bun Fund Recipient and the bunnynators wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately these situations are quite common. So I want to remind everybunny about the importance of spaying and neutering your bunny again!

Thank you to everyone who supported these 60 homeless buns, financially and otherwise.

FINN

Our first Needy Bun Fund recipient is FINN!

Please read Finn's story to find out more about this wonderful needy bun!

8/22/04 UPDATE: Finn is Home! August 14, 2004 marked the first annual gathering of LL members in Hinkley, OH. Angie and Matt drove 8 hours to come meet other LL members and bring home their long awaited special bunny girl, Finn! The moment is something none of us will ever forget... Welcome Home Finn!

7/15/04 UPDATE: Unfortunately the splint did not work out as well as Dr. Riggs (Finn's vet) had hoped and recommended amputation as the next step. Finn was scheduled for amputation surgery July 1st. She is adjusting well. Finn's First Romp is a beautiful tribute to all the people that have been responsible for her new quality of life. (Please note that the video link may take a while to load depending on your connection. High speed internet is recommended!)

Hopefully Finn will be going to her new home with LL member, Angie, in the next month!

3/20/04 UPDATE: This is posted on the Buckeye House Rabbit Society site:

Finn underwent the surgery to attempt to straighten her right leg on Thursday, March 11. She did very well. Many thanks to Angela and the folks at the Lagomorphs Lounge bulletin board, who sent a generous donation for her surgery! They even sent Finn a Good Luck card for her surgery.

At the end of the surgery, a Schroeder-Thomas splint was installed on her leg. One week after the surgery, the tension on the splint will be adjusted as needed. As you can see from the photo below, it looks like she is dragging around an ironing board. If healing goes well, the splint may be removed in no less than six weeks. Physical therapy will eventually be necessary to rehabilitate the leg.

Finn will be recovering in Cleveland for another six weeks or so, then will go to her new home in New York to live with Angela and her husband, and their two bunnies!

3/15/04 UPDATE: Finn is recovering from surgery. She isn't very comfortable with her splint right now but hopefully she'll be hopping around again real soon!

3/01/04 UPDATE: Finn is scheduled for surgery March 11, 2004. The LL board wishes her a safe and speedy recovery. Upon her recovery, Finn will be transported from Ohio to her new home in New York with a fellow LL member, Angieang21!! Congratulations to both!

Thank you to everyone who supported Finn, financially and otherwise.

Midwest Rabbit R&R

LL member Jam224 nominated Natalia and her other rescue friends for the NBF.

Natalia is missing a hind leg from a dog attack about a year ago. Her upper thigh is still present, but has been pushed in toward her pelvis from lying on that side all the time. She will be a good candidate for a wheelchair, since she has trouble getting around. She is also missing a top tooth.

She demands attention by rushing over to you and shoving her head under your hand for petting. She is very loving, and though she and Apricot don't get along, we let her play with Charlie Jr. and Melissa when Apricot is off exploring the rescue.

Email received from Midwest Rabbit R&R:

Hello!

We're pleased and surprised to hear that Natalia has been chosen to receive the NBF award!

Thank you very much, and thanks to your generous members for supporting special needs rabbits like Natalia.

Our mission is fivefold; it encompasses rescue, adoption, health, education, and fiscal responsibility. Part of our mission is "to provide vet care to injured, ill, or elderly rabbits; to provide quality lifelong care and hospice to un-adopted rabbits." The NBF award helps us fulfill this part of our mission, and we are grateful for that.

Again, many thanks to the LL, and we will send updates and photos so that your members can see how your generosity has helped the rabbits!

Best,

Jill Pernicano

SaveABunny

LL Head Moderator Alohi nominated Nelville for Thanksgiving NBF Campaign.

Nelville is a six-month old mini-lop who was bought at a county fair and was owner surrendered to a local shelter, because of his teeth and they lost interest in having him around.

The owner surrender form said that he was out of his cage 2 hours per week.

Nelville was rescued on 11/07/06 from a shelter who was about to euthanize him because he has a severe malocclusion of his front teeth and they did not have room or money to keep him at the shelter.

When a woman heard Nelvilles story she tearfully donated her Christmas Shopping money to Saveabunny, she couldn't bear the thought of him being euthanized because he had tooth problems.

Nelville was in dire need of proper dental care, it was apparent he would lose his lower two front teeth because of past neglect.

UPDATE 03/02/2007 from SaveABunny web site:

Status: Adopted on Feb 28 2007

Shelter of Origin: Humane Society of Silicon Valley

Hi!

I am so happy! I was just adopted to a great family. I also now have a bunny girlfriend named FeiFei. Isn't she the most adorable, little bunny you have ever seen? It was love at first sight and now we are living happily ever after with our new parents, Mark and Ivy.

The people at SaveABunny and I want to also express my deepest gratitude to the Lagomorph Lounge for selecting me as their recipient for the Needy Bunny Fund to help me have my incisors removed. I was in bad shape and really needed medical attention.

With the help from the Lagomorph Lounge, SaveABunny was able to get me the dental surgery I desperately needed.

Thank you to Alohi and the Lagomorph Lounge.

Love,
