| To hear the words "your cat has diabetes" often stirs up feelings of hopelessness and despair. However, diabetes is not a death sentence. Many cats live for years with this disease - leading normal, happy, healthy lives. All that is required is a little time, love and patience. I spend about 10-15 minutes a day treating Kismet for her diabetes ... in exchange I have gotten many more months with my beloved cat ... time that would have otherwise been lost. My only regret is that I did not recognized the symptoms for what they were earlier on, thus delaying her treatment. My hope is that this website will aid another in finding the answers they are seeking. Some of the things I have learned along the way are: Communication: Having a good line of communication between you and your cat's veterinarian is extremely important in dealing with this disease. New treatment options are introduced almost daily. It is vital that you feel comfortable in discussing these options with the vet as well as any questions you may have concerning feline diabetes. A good veterinarian will welcome such discussions and be pleased to have you working with him or her as a partner in the treatment of your cat. Education: Diabetes is a fairly complicated disease to understand and treat. Educating yourself will aid in your ability to help your cat. The most current and up to date information can be found on the internet - especially at the links that I have provided. I recommend printing off copies from sites that have information of interest to you - that way you can go back to them time and time again as you gain a better understanding of what this disease is all about. What may seem confusing or of little value now, may have greater impact later on as you begin to get a better grasp on things. Documentation: Having a folder or binder filled with pertinent information about your feline diabetic is very important as well. I have one for Kismet that contains pages I have copied off the web, blood glucose curve data, lab reports, and weekly updates on her progress. I also find that keeping a daily log of injection times, blood glucose and urine checks, dietary information and various other observations made throughout the day has not only helped me to better determine the progress that is being made, but has also helped the veterinarian in assessing the overall health and condition of Kismet. Dedication: The treatment of diabetes requires patience and dedication on the part of the caregiver. Unfortunately, there isn't one "magic dose" of one particular insulin that will resolve high blood glucose levels in all cats. Treatment often begins with a low dose of insulin and then a 7 - 10 day waiting period for the dose to settle. Afterwards, a blood glucose curve is usually performed and any adjustments made will be in small incremental steps. As you can see, it may take weeks or months before the right dose for your cat will be found. Having the dedication to ensure that your cat receives treatment, even though it may take a long time to achieve your goals, is essential to see you through both the good times and the bad. Kismet & I have had a few disappointing and discouraging moments during the past few months, but my commitment to her to keep trudging forward regardless has seen us to the point where we are today. Treatment is sometimes trial and error, but once you discover the right combination, the rewards are enormous. |
