Kau-ta-noh Jr's is a new drum group with an old style. The name Kau-ta-noh means People of the Submerged Pine Tree. Our intent is not to travel to every pow-wow, but to build a strong drum group. We sing our original songs and attempt to stay true to old style straight songs.

The group began singing together in 1998. The members originate from the groups: Kau-ta-noh Society, Stoney Creek, Young Society, Eastern Bull, Windy Pines, Red Snake, Blackshirt, Standing Deer, and Southern Eagle. With hopes of starting a drum for the people in Robeson Co. NC. Our dream has become a reality.

John Oxendine II, the head singer, moved back to Robeson County from California with the intent of starting a new drum group. He began talking of his intent as soon as he came back home to several associates. He was happy to learn that many others had the same idea. He sought out one of the original members of Kau-ta-noh Society Singers, Brian Graham, who had been away from home for 8 years with the military. He then talked to Matthew Chavis, who told him of a group that he and Quinn Lowry had started called Windy Pines. But Matt was interested in working with John to make a more power group. Eric Freeman and Matt also were previous members of Eastern Bull. So the group began meeting to discuss the possibility.

We practiced at the North Carolina Cultural Center and each others homes. We practiced religiously and worked hard to build upon our style: Old style straight songs. We practiced and served as mentors to the Red Snake drum group, a group of young men who also met at the Cultural Center. When Red Snake decided to split, the members Sam Pedro, Dave Locklear and John Chavis joined Kau-ta-noh, Jr's. Jay Revels built a drum for the group and Carl Anthony Hunt initially served as a spiritual guide.

The two newest member of the group are Chris Ammons of Standing Deer, and Tere Locklear, a former member of Southern Eagle.

KTN 'till we die is the slogan of Kau-Ta-Noh Jr's and we are proud of our ability to build upon our base and the sense of family has withstood many obstacles.
