Superintendents Corner: Highland Memorial Park
Today is June 21st 2009, Happy Father's Day!
On Friday June 19th we had a storm that took down a few trees at Highland Memorial Park, so when you go to an area to visit a loved ones grave you may notice a difference to the landscape. We are still in the cleanup process and if all goes well on Monday June 22nd we should have most of it cleaned up. We are planning on planting a few trees this fall to take care of a few trees that we lost the past few years. We are almost done setting the Memorials that were placed on graves just before Memorial Day so once those are set we then will finish the Memorials that were refinished and get those set. We have started on the work orders with sunken Memorials, we started in Section 31 and are working down and are currently in Section 19. When those are complete we will do sunken graves and bad sod areas. Some areas of the Cemetery have some patches of clover that need to be taken care of and we started on that last week. Once we get the work orders finished we will then get started on some other projects that we have planned. Some of those projects are getting all of the lot marker number posts cleaned. Fix the drainage pipes in section 26 and add some to that to drain the area better when it rains. Clean up the area behind the Maintenance building and plant a pattern of evergreens to screen of the building. Plant some flower beds around the Columbarium and add a few more perennials in the gardens to replace those that died from the crazy weather we had last year. We are also in the process of trimming the grass that has grown over the Memorials, some areas have not been down for a long time and need attention. Memorial Day saw a fairly large crowd attend the Service that was conducted by the New Berlin VFW post. It was a very nice day with temperatures being in the 60's and partly cloudy. A change in how we handle grave decorations will be implemented in 2010. We will no longer store the decorations starting in the spring of 2010. All decorations that are not in a Regulation vase will be removed and discarded. If the grave marker does not have a regulation vase in the marker itself you can purchase a seperate unit that will be installed to the side of the marker. The green metal, white plastic, etc. vases you purchase with flowers and stick in the ground are NOT regulation vases and will be removed. Certain Holidays allow you to place various decorations but those are only allowed for 1 week. In the fall we have to put vases down for winter and starting in the fall of 2010 those flowers will be discarded and no longer kept for 3 or 4 weeks. Any questions you have about rules and services offered at Highland Memorial Park can be answered by calling 262-782-8711 Mon. - Fri. 8:00 to 4:30 and Sat. 8:00 to Noon.
