Kintvisi Monastery Complex

Monastery is named for Saint Nicholas. Church is famous for it's unique painting style. All frescoes are performed on strong light blue background. Frescoes were decorated with gold leafs. Monastery complex consists of three churches. Central church is thought to be built in 13-th century, and it is named for Saint Nicholas, next to it, is located smallest church named for Saint George, sciensists suppose, that it was biult in middleage. While soviet period this church was used by security guards as living room.

Oldest church is built in 10-11-th centuries. It is Saint Mery's church. Building is very much damaged. Here is worldwide known Kintvisi Maryam's fresco, which is not protected from the rain and wind. By the help of some enthusiasts, nowadays it is somehow covered with wooden construction (frames), that is very basic and can not protect it permanently. In the main church is also famous Kintvisi angel's fresco. Here you can find one of a few images of Tamar King. Behind monastery is a spring.

Monastery is located near Kareli (Kartli region) in Dzama valley, which easily can be called as Monastery Valley. You need around 2 hours to reach monastery from Tbilisi. Last part of the road is hardly damaged, although it is possible to come to the place of the destination without serious troubles.
