Happy 2006!
We can't believe half the school year has passed. Time has flown by
- and look at all the learning we have accomplished! In the past few
months, our students have been filling their heads with so much knowledge.
In reading, we kicked off November by learning different nursery rhymes.
Many parent volunteers came to celebrate our learning with a Nursery Rhyme
Olympics. We carried water buckets just like Jack and Jill, we
jumped over candlesticks like Jack Be Nimble, we knocked poor Humpty
Dumpty off a wall, we dropped wool from Baa Baa Black Sheep, and we raced
a mouse up the Hickory Dickory Dock Clock (just to name a few!). It
was a memorable day.
We also celebrated our 50th day of school with a "50's Day." We
dressed up in the 50's style, played games using bubble gum, mini hot rod
cars, and hoola hoops. We also had a sock hop and danced to music
from the 50's. We ended our day with a 50's treat - a root beer float.
We ended November with our traditional Thanksgiving feast complete with a
thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and pilgrim and Native American
dinner guests. Yum Yum!
December was filled with wintery treats. We compared different
variations of the Gingerbread Man stories from different lands and
cultures. We ended our month with a tree trimming party, a
gingerbread house making party and a trip on the Polar Express.
2006 started with a bang as we created portraits using a glyph: stripes on
the shirt if you stayed up until midnight, spots on the shirt if you fell
asleep before midnight, etc. We
also remembered a hero - Dr. Martin Luther King - and learned about
the changes he made so that we could live in a world that was fair and
equal.
We recently visited the Los Angeles Zoo. The students discussed many
scientific facts that they noticed,
such as the number of legs, body covering, movement. students will
be doing further research on these
animals in March.
We are currently comparing different versions of our favorite fairy
tales. We read and compared Cinderella stories from penguin tales
and Hawaiian beaches to Halloween flights. We also read, compared
and performed a readers' theater for Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
There was even a story about a bear who intruded on a family named The
Blairs. What a switch! Our last fairy tales are The Three
Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Princess and the Pea. There
is a Cajun version of Red Riding Hood from the Bayou and a Hawaiian
version of the Three Little Pigs that make a house of lava rocks.
The students really have to think about what parts of the story are the
same and what parts are different.
It has been a great first half of the year! We can't wait to see how
much excitement and learning that is yet to come! Happy New Year!
