This is an introductory level course designed to give students solid grounding in drawing techniques, color theory, design layout, basic 3-D sculptural design, and the knowledge of principles and elements of art.   Exploratory techniques, with graphite, colored pencils, watercolors, acrylic, clay, and cardboard will be explored
The first half of the year, students willl learn the most basic necessity to the arts - realistic drawing.  Basic elements such as line, shape, texture, form, and space are ingredients of drawing.   Perspecive, composition/layout, lighting, and dimensional form will be studied so that drawing ability will improve.  Materials such as felt tip markers, prism colors, charcoal, and pen and ink are used.  For the second half of the year the course will include the execution of several paintings in a variety of media such as pastels, watercolor, acrylics, and mixed media.   Assignments will be based on color theory.   Several major periods of painting will be studied
This introductory ceramic course will build three dimensional design skills in the media of clay.  Three dimensions imply working as a sculptor does - in the round- considering space and form.   The emphasis is on hand building techniques such as  masks, lanterns, sculptural animals, functional containers, as well as the handling of ceramic supplies and glazes.
Students will be expected to know the basics of hand building and expand upon them.  Larger, more sculptural projects will be explored.  Many decorating techniques will be used including slip-trailing, wax resist, and watercolor.   Under glazing with and without patterns will be explored.   Emphasis will be in idea gathering, critical thinking, aesthetics, and interpretation of art.
Students will prooduce graphic designs as communication.   The curriculum lessons will define logos, poster layout design, linoleum printing, paper making and collage, airbrush techniques, and computer designs.   Advanced lessons as the word as image will be explored.   Matting and framing techniques, as well as experience and preparation of art displays and gallery shows, will be involved.  Field trips to local and major museums will be planned as part of the curriculum.
Continued development of color theory with added emphasis on the technique of such masters as Chuck Close, Henri Seurat, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, etc.  The student will experiment with various approaches to color, composition, and paint handling in the creation of both realistic and abstract aprroaches to such themes on still life, landscape, and portrait images.
This course is a continuation of Ceramics II.  More elaborate constructon techniques will be combined with respect to formulation of concepts.  Projects will involve dioramas and fables,  American Native rattles, Surreal Insects, etc.   Throwing on the wheel will be explored.
An introduction to the use and perception of materials in design.  This course examines the history of materials as used in sculpture, product design, interiors, and architecture.   Students build upon their foundation skills  from  two and three dimensional design fundamentals to develop an understanding of space allocation and the relationship of form and function.
