It is usually done as a descendant tree, that is starting from one pair of great (great, etc.) grandparents and including all of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, etc. (Along the roots can be the names of the parents of the starting couple.)

Legend

Along branches:

Top name = son or daughter

Next name = son or daughter –in-law

# = year born. -# = year died.

# = year of marriage.

Double digit years are in the

nineteen hundreds.

[Full name] = divorced from family member.

[Name or year] = not sure of information.

Usually arranged in age order from

Notes:

1. The starting couple is at the trunk.

2. There are two types of illustrations of roots. With the first you may include some parents of the starting couple. With the other you may include the starting couple’s parents and grandparents.

3. In the calculation process, each branch section, the trunk, and each root section that includes (a) name(s), is considered a “branch”.

4. On some small family trees I may, or may not, put a leaf at the end of some or all of the outer branches.

5. The people and the relationships on “THE SAMPLE FAMILY” family tree are fictitious.

(I also make English WITH Hebrew chart printouts. Charts can have English and Hebrew names, and nicknames.)

For info on a chart have total number of people; a couple counts as two.

Suggestion: One can make color or black & white copies of the finished product to distribute to cousins.

Shown below, left, is (an extremely reduced copy of) a tree that I drew in 1992. This one has 218 branches and 6 generations. (This is a descendant tree with branches arranged in age order.) (Emblem is not included.)
