THE MILLENNIUM TRIP

2.  Malatya, Turkey – 12 June 1999

map

Have just returned from watching the sunrise over the 2000-year-old Commagene statues on Mount Nemrut.  The heads of these statues are taller than I am.  They stand propped up and trunk-less on top of the mountain, facing the rising sun.  Reminiscent of Shelley’s Ozymandias.

Fortunately I have not encountered any trouble in Eastern Turkey so far, and have not spoken to any travellers who have.  Have found it relatively easy to recognize the Kurds by their hazel-coloured eyes, but have found them to be a most inquisitive and friendly people.  The Turkish courts have postponed sentencing on Ochlan (leader of the Kurdish Worker’s Party) until 16th June, thank goodness, and by then I should be in Iran.

From here I go to Van Lake and from there to Mount Ararat and the Iranian border.  Am glued to my short-wave radio and the BBC world service for any news about the Pakistan/India situation.
