| Saturday 19th July 2008 @ Benburn Park
Karori Slapperz 2 – Lower Hutt 0 Steve-O, Beggy/Skid Farewell to this land’s cheerless marshes In true Wellington Council style, the games that they should axe go ahead and visa versa, so it was with no surprise that following torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning we’d be playing. Now I ain’t grumbling about it, cos we ain’t played since 26th June and anymore cancellations means that we have to play ‘double headers’ (Saturdays and Sundays). So I was as happy as an octopus with sixteen legs and given the state of the water on the park, maybe being a cephalopod would have faired well. Anyway, the Slapperz bowl up (eventually – lots of late fines) and scrap our usual short passing game for a more Hackney Marshes/first date approach (get the ball up there in the soft stuff and hope it goes your way). Barts in goal, Bill, Bram, Skid and Jase in Defence; Gilby and Bison on the wings with Fitz and Wrighty in the midfield; leave Beggy upfront with me. Ten minutes in and we finally settle after an indecisive start, highlighted by Barts miss-timing a shot that was saved by the goal mouth puddle. A few nice sliding tackles and an auctication involving Skid and Lower Hutt’s striker were also capped by the ref (who looked like the twin brother of my old geology lecturer Ian “Granite’ Platen). A few of us came close but at the half it was no cigar. Steve-O came on for Bill (still knackered after his ‘engaging’ Euro footy holiday – quack!) at left back but was keen to play further up the field which made more a five man midfield. That was until Fitz pulls a hammy and limps off. So James came on to initially move Bison into midfield with Wrighty, although after Steve-O still keen to play up field, Bison suggests that he moves to left back with Steve-O officially in the middle of the park (you confused too?). As instant merit for this ‘tactical’ change resulted in Beggy persistent running passing on to Wrighty who crossed for Steve-O to volley in a beaut of a goal. 1-0. Lower Hutt had their chances too and it took some solid defensive work combined with some psychotic lunacy by Bram to diminish any threats from midway through the second half. Skid pushed up field more and when Beggy’s shot landed in the puddle, Skid was there to ensure it went over the line. Stats will have to go to Beggy but it looked like Skid put it over. 2-0 So apart from an amazing save from Barts as he leapt like a squirrel catching the last acorn on Earth to secure a clean sheet, it was game over. Caked in mud it was back to the changing rooms to endure a luke warm shower with all the water flow of an old man taking a leak, then down to the club rooms only to find out that they were closed. So we headed down the Quiet Lady where Beggy picks up the Gottfried Batli MOTM and Fitz fines most of us a MacGyver. The Pikeys lost so a win against Naenae next week and then to beat the Pikeys, then Massey should be enough to secure we stay in Capital five By Geeza (cos Beggy ain’t got a computer, the luddite) |
