s Finished Size: small--5 ½ inches in diameter; large--7 inches in diameter Gauge: small--4 sts/in; large--3 sts/in Materials Small: 260 yds sport weight alpaca in pumpkin color (MC) and 8 yds sport weight alpaca in dark green (CC) Size 10 dpns and 16" size 10 circular needles Large: 440 yds worsted weight wool in pumpkin color (MC) and 10 yds worsted weight wool in dark green (CC) Size 13 dpns and 24” size 13 circular needles stuffing material of choice Notes: Use yarn double stranded throughout. Use dpns when there are too few sts to fit on circular needle. M1 = make one stitch out of the strand running between two sts. Directions Using MC yarn doubled, CO 28 sts onto dpns. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Rnd 1: knit. Rnd 2: *k1, M1, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (42 sts) Rnds 3 & 4: *k2, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rnd 5: *k2, M1, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (56 sts) Rnds 6 & 7: *k3, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rnd 8: *k3, M1, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (70 sts) Rnds 9, 10 & 11: *k4, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rnd 12: *k4, M1, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (84 sts) Rnd 13: *k5, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rep rnd 13 until work measures 9 (15) inches from cast on edge. Bottom decreases Rnd 1: *k2tog, k1, k2tog, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (56 sts) Rnd 2, 3 & 4: *k3, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rnd 5: *k1, k2tog, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (42 sts) Rnd 6 & 7: *k2, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. Rnd 8: *k2tog, p1* rep between *s to end of rnd. (28 sts) Rnds 9 & 10: knit Rnds 11 & 12: *k2tog* rep between *s to end of rnd. (7 sts) Cut yarn and draw tail through sts and pull tight. Weave in ends. Stem Using CC yarn doubled, CO 8 sts onto one dpn. Work 8-st I-cord until piece is two inches long or more. K2tog across last row. Cut yarn, draw tail through sts and pull tight. Weave in ends. Finishing Place the pumpkin & stem in a lingerie bag or a pillowcase with the top closed. Wash them on the heavy duty cycle in a low level of hot water and with a small amount of detergent. Repeat the cycle if more felting is desired. Blow up a balloon inside the pumpkin and allow to air dry. Stuff pumpkin. Sew top closed with the stem sticking out. You are welcome to use this pattern. Joy Jannotti 2005. |
