Baby Cardigan

Materials
worsted weight yarn, 4 oz
US size 5 & 7 needles, straight or circular
scissors, tapestry needle, stitch markers, stitch holders
five buttons, needle and thread

Gauge:  17 sts in 4 inches in Stockinette st on larger needles. 
Size:  6 months (12 months)
Note:  this sweater is knit in one piece from the top down on two needles in a raglan style.  The button bands are done in seed st, the body of the sweater is in Stockinette st, the cuffs and neck bands are done in ribbing.  Changes for the larger size are in parentheses.

Instructions
The beginning of this pattern is the same for both sizes.
Neckband
Cast 47 sts onto smaller needle.
Row 1: (RS) seed 5 for border, place marker, *k1, p1* rep between * until 6 sts rem, k1, place marker, seed 5 for border.
Row 2: seed 5, slip marker, *p1, k1* rep between * until 6 sts rem, p1, slip marker, seed 5.
Row 3: rep row 1
Row 4: rep row 2
Row 5: (first buttonhole)
Boy buttonhole is on left front:  seed 2, YO, k2tog, seed 1, work to end as established.
Girl buttonhole is on right front:  work as established to last 5 sts, seed 2, YO, k2tog, seed 1.
Row 6: rep row 2
Row 7: rep row 1

Raglan increases
Change to larger needle.
Note:M1 is Make 1. With your left needle, lift the running strand between the two stitches from front to back. Knit this strand in the back loop.
Row 1: (WS) seed 5, slip marker, p 6 (left front), place marker, p 4 (left sleeve), place marker, p17 (back), place marker, p4 (right sleeve), place marker, p6 (right front), slip marker, seed 5.
Row 2: seed 5, slip marker, * k to within one st of marker, M1, k1, slip marker, k1, M1* rep between * to last increase marker, k to last 5 sts, slip marker, seed 5.
Row 3: seed 5, purl across to last 5 sts, seed 5.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the fronts have 20 (21) sts, the sleeves have 32 (34) sts and the back has 45 (47) sts.  AT THE SAME TIME add buttonholes in the seed band every 2 1/4 (2 3/8) inches.

Dividing row

(RS) seed 5, k 20 (21), remove marker and slip left front sts (the ones just worked) to holder.
K 32 (34), remove marker and slip left sleeve sts to holder.
K 45 (47), remove marker and slip back sts to holder.
K 32 (32), remove marker.  Leave right sleeve sts on needle.  Slip right front sts to holder.

Right sleeve

Work the sleeve in St st.  Cast on one st at the beg of the next two rows. 
Start counting with the dividing row and dec 2 sts on rows 8, 16 and 24, one at the beg and one at the end of the row.  (For larger size, dec 2 sts on row 26 also.)
Work even until sleeve is 5 (5 1/2) in long from the dividing row.
Change to smaller needle and work k1, p1 rib for 6 rows.
Bind off in pattern and leave a long tail, about 12 inches.

Left sleeve

Slip sleeve sts from holder onto larger needle.
Beg with a WS row and work as for right sleeve.

Body

Slip right front sts onto larger needle.
On RS, work as established to end of row.
Turn and work back across right front sts.
Slip back sts onto needle and work across them.
Slip left front sts onto needle and work across them.
Continue working the body sts evenly as established.
Continue to add buttonholes in the seed band every 2 1/4 (2 3/8) inches.
After the fourth buttonhole, work even another 2 (2 1/8) inches.
Beg on RS, change to smaller needles and work two rows k1, p1 ribbing, keeping the seed bands on each end.
On third row of rib, add last buttonhole.
Work 4 or 5 more rows of rib.
Bind off in pattern.

Finishin
g : Sew arm seams. Weave in ends. Block.
