J.L. Johnson Store - York, ND - c. 1921
One of the earliest settlers in the York vicinity was J.L.
Johnson, who filed on a homestead a mile west of the present town
in August of 1887. Mrs. Johnson came the next year. A few years
later they moved into town and settled on the north side. After a
few months they moved to the south side of the tracks and set up
the first store building. They were the first to start a business
in what is now the business section of town. The original
building was erected where the last store was in York. It burned
down in 1913 and was rebuilt in 1914. Mr. Johnson ran it until
1923, when he retired.
