ETX-90/EC JFB's Celestial SeasoningsETX-90/EC

As you can see I am slightly partial to Meade products. They currently seem to have the best bang for the buck.

Actually I'm quite new to this hobby, but I've always had and interest and so far have really enjoyed it. I'm sure I'll end up spending a lot of time (and money) satisfying my curiosity.

You should be able to hear the music from the Star Hustler in midi form. Our local NJN station would show the Star Hustler right before sign-off. The music is the part that hooked me, and soon after the fascination with the heavens took over.

Unfortunately the midi version doesn't do it justice, but the real version is just too large to place on the page.

My Stuff:

ETX-90/EC
Just bought it at the Nature Co. Feb 25,1998
Seems their store is closing so I got it for 30% off!!! $416.50! (Shop globally. Buy locally)
Autostar
Bought it at the Discover Channel Store. It's the new version of the Nature Company. The one I got from the Nature Co. seemed to be defective. This new one works great!
MEADE LX50 10" SCT

Sold Just too darn cumbersome to setup and use effectively. Bummer.

4" Reflector
Unknown brand from TOYS R US in the 70's. Good enough to see Saturn as a round object with a bulge diagonally across it.

2 Tamaya Sextants and a NC-77 Navigation Computer
Purchased from a fellow in California through Astro-Mart. (see below)

Meade talk:
Jan. 6, 1999
"The GO TO feature will become even more accessible to beginning astronomers as, over the next few months, we apply it as well to many of Meade's less expensive refracting telescopes," John C. Diebel, chairman and CEO of Meade Instruments

ETX-90/EC Discussion board. Lots of good information!
The best ETX site around. Constantly updated. Go here if you own a ETX!
The official Meade Instruments page with lots of info!
For Windows 95/NT only!
Astronomy software for DOS, WINDOWS, MAC.
Just like the name says.
The Meade Advanced Product User Group. All kinds of info and questions, mostly about Meade products.
Sky & Telescope's web site.
Runs MAPUG and has quite a nice Astronomy/Weather page.
Navigational Instruments - Sextants, books, videos. Sextants from $29-$2500. Some really interesting books in the catalog.

Robert B. Denny

For what it does... a perfect 5 comets.
Controls the LX200 telescope (ETX version coming soon!) using a computer interface or by VOICE!
Very cool.
Integrates with many of the packages listed here. FREE with TheSky 5

Steven S Tuma
Excellent log and night viewing scheduler. Excellent telescope support. Tons of free add-ons from the web site. Great price. Newsgroups available from the site.
Average planetarium portion. (graphics wise) No rendering and looks hand drawn Bummer.
Mike Smithwick
Beautiful planet renderings, sound effects. Basically the perfect planetarium show.
Not a 5 comet rating because it has NO telescope support and none in work. :-(
JC Research
Nice planetarium portion. (graphics wise) No rendering.
Doesn't offer much more than any other program listed here. A little pricey for what you really get.
KlassM Software
Nice planetarium portion. (graphics wise) No rendering.
Hasn't been improved in a few years.
No telescope support
Looks like it's no longer going to be developed
Latest version ©1996 :-(
SkyMap Software
Very good log and night viewing scheduler. Good telescope support.
Average planetarium portion. (graphics wise) No rendering and looks hand drawn.
Similar to Deepsky 99.
Sienna

Another outstanding planetarium program. Very visually pleasing. Telescope support with plug-ins for other features available.
No Hover Mode and high quality renderings

Bisque
Great telescope support. Nice planetarium with good graphics. Still not close to DS5 or Starry Night's rendering. NO DEMO

As you can see most software packages I've rated are four out of five comets.

Unfortunately none of them really makes you say "That's the only package I need." They all have important features that the others just don't have. Starry Night is pretty close but it just can't match Distant Suns Hover Mode and planet renderings.

Making the planetarium portion as nice as possible is very important to me. How many nights do you sit inside because of bad weather wondering what you missing? A good looking planetarium makes inside observing fun too.

Just my opinion.

More to come...
