An Overview of Siglar

Introducing the world's easiest acronym creation software program: Siglar. Siglar is a simple and ligthweigth program, yet powerful and fast. It automaticaly creates many suggestions for new acronyms using the initial letters of words or word parts in a phrase or name. Siglar have many options to configure how it creates the acronyms suggestions. The sugested aconyms can be copied to another aplication or saved in a text file (utf-8 format). Siglar supports unicode character codification. Siglar is a program for the GNU/LINUX operating system.

System Requirements

Siglar requires a computer with a GNU/LINUX distribution installed as operating system, with Kernel 2.6.X series and GTK+ 2.10.x (2.8.x for version 0.8.3) libraries. Siglar doesn't require GNOME environment. Any computer with a hardware configuration capable to run a GNU/LINUX distribution that acomplish this requirements is able to run Siglar.

Installation

Simple install procedure:

  1. Download the siglar-x.x.x.i386.tar.gz file (the package file) and copy to an directory of your choise.
  2. Open an terminal and `cd' to that directory.
  3. The pachage file is a tar gzipped compressed file containing the Siglar application files in binary form and the installation shell script. You need to unpack them to run the installation script, to do this type:
    $ tar xzvf siglar-x.x.x.i386.tar.gz
  4. Enter in the new directory.
    $ cd siglar-x.x.x.i386
  5. Next run the installation script (become root if necessary):
    $ ./install.sh
  6. Now the Siglar program is installed in your system, to run it type:
    $ siglar

The Siglar installation script doesn't create any desktop shortcuts. If you want to run the Siglar program other way than from the command line you need to create manually the launchers or shortcuts in your system.

Quick Start Information

The Siglar main window is where you do all of the work. The Siglar window includes several components: The buttons line at top provides quick ways of performing the most common tasks. The entry box where you enter the phrase or words used by Siglar to build the acronyms proposals, Siglar works automatically as you introduce the words. The Main Window Area displays the acronyms proposals, here you can select the ones that you prefer and by right-click the mouse shows an pop-menu where you can do select and copy tasks. Finally, the Status Line displays the number of acronyms proposed by the program.

The following table describes the buttons functions.

Saves the acronyms sugestions to a text file (UNIX utf-8 formated).
Clears the content of the entry box and the main window area.
Shows the options window.
Shows the siglar help browser window.
Shows the about window with informations about version and author.
Close the Siglar program.

Download

Siglar is distributed in two versions: An development version for testing new code and features, is by nature unstable and may contain inaccuracies or errors. An production version is a clean and stable version ready for normal use. All Siglar packages are named in the form siglar-X.Y.Z.platform.tar.gz where: X is the major number version. Y is the minor number version. Z is the micro number version, if z is even the package is a production release, if is odd the package is a development release. Platform refers to the target hardware (currently only i386).

siglar-0.8.1.i386.tar.gz 02/05/2008 This is the first release of the 0.8.x series. Now siglar has a help browser (experimental) with suport for multiple languages at runtime. The buttons on the toolbar can have text and change the image size. The text size in the status bar is bigger and shows the words cleaned from strange characters as they are used by siglar to build acronyms.

Feedback

Siglar has been tested in the Debian 4.0, Alinex 2.1, Fedora Core 6 and OpenSuse 10.2, it would be very useful know how it behaviors on other GNU/LINUX distributions. New ideas, opinions about siglar are welcome too. I would very much like to hear what you migth have to say.
