OOTP Manager Profiles

Here is my contribution to the OOTP family. I have determined the Managerial Tendencies for every manager that managed the Major Leagues from 1980 to 2001. At first, I wasn't able to come across any ratings for the Managers. Stats Inc. had printed a set of ratings for the 2000 managers in the early part of spring 2001. However, I wasn't able to find any current or past ratings for Major League managers. Thus, I came up with my own little calculation: Yearly Totals for Teams.

In OOTP, there are 5 managerial tendencies: Stealing, Sac Bunt, Hit and Run, Hook and Pitch Around. For each tendency, I tried to think of a Stat that is related to how a manager acts. Below is a list of the each tendency and the stat which I choose to relate the tendency to:

  • Stealing - The total # of Stolen Bases and Caught Stealing (Number of Stolen Base attempts). I figured with this total, we would see how often a manager likes to steal.

  • Sac Bunt - The total number of Sac Bunts. Again, this total should tell us how often the manager likes to Sacrifice Bunt.

  • Hit and Run - Again, the total number of Stolen Base Attempts. The reason I choose this stat was because when I play the OOTP game, and I hit and run, sometimes the baserunner ends up trying to steal a base. Plus, there is really isn't any other stat out there that could show indications of how often a Manager likes to Hit and Run. Thus, I used the more logical stat, Stolen Base Attempts.

  • Hook - The total number of Complete Games. I figured Complete Games would indicate to us how often the Manager likes to stick with his starter rather than go to his bullpen.

  • Pitch Around - This one was not easy to determine. I couldn't find a stat to indicate a Manager's tendency in this area. Thus, I decided to keep it on the same level for all managers by making everyone having a Normal rating for this tendency.

To determine the rating for each tendency, I entered the above stats for each team for each year. Then by using the Max and Min figures for that year, I was able to determine the cut off points for each rating. For example, in 1990, the highest # of Sac Bunts was 100, the lowest # was 20. Thus, there is a difference of 80. Divide by 5, and you get 16. Resulting in 36 being the cuttoff for being Almost Never, 52 being the cut off for Not Often, 68 for Normal, 84 for Often and 100 for Very Often.

Every manager that managed from 1980 to 2001 is listed by the team they managed and the year that they managed. In the future I would like to organize the data and just list the manager with his average rating for each tendency. I also want to list out the managers from additional time periods such as 1960 to 1979, 1940 to 1959, 1920 to 1939, etc... For right now, just go to the drop down box below and select the year you want to look at. Enjoy!

Finding the stats by team was not easy. Until I stumbled upon a wonderful website called Sport Databases. It has all of the stats by player, by team, and by league since 1871!! Amazing!! It even has stats for Hockey and Basketball. All you do is download their relatively small program (about 1.2 mb) and use their application to download the information into spreadsheet format. You have to be online before you use the program.

The Manager by Team information came from the website Baseball Reference. Probably the best baseball stat website that I have ever found.
