Geophysics
Have you ever wondered as to what the most awesome and terrifying experience one could have in life? For me it is a monstrous earthquake like the one that occurred on the 26th of December in 2004 off the west coast of northern Sumatra which triggered a stupendous Tsunami, the most destructive one the world has ever seen.

At present, I am a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Connecticut and I am into solid Earth geophysics research. I carry out research on the heterogeneity of the solid inner core as an advisee of Prof. Vernon Cormier. In a way, we are "hunting Earthquakes"  because the seismic waves initiated from each and every earthquake or nuclear explosion are unique and take the form of an encrypted code, if deciphered, they tell an intriguing story about the interior structure and dynamics of the world we live in given that we select suitable source-receiver combinations. I learn how to process, analyze and interpret seismic data, especially waveform modeling and geophysical inversion techniques such as linear regression, iteration, non linear techniques..  Believe me, it is an absorbing subject !!

I hail from the ravishing hill capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy, a gorgeous city  enriched with a rich heritage. My high school diploma and bacherlor's degree were earned at Trinity College Kandy (TCK) and at the University of Peradeniya (UPSL), Sri Lanka respectively.

Economics
If you ask me what the most influential social science is, I don't have any doubt that it's economics! Just like geophysics in the realm of hardcore physical sciences, economics in the realm of social sciences intrigues me simply because understanding something as random and sometimes chaotic as human thinking and dynamics related to unlimited wants and limited resources in a systematic way is fascinating. It is crazy to think about such human behavior in terms of mathematical equations but it is "double" crazy to realize that they do really work pretty well (not always!). I am very much interested in obtaining this "magical" skill of quantifying and interpreting human behavior with predictive modeling and econometric techniques, whether it be at individual level or corporate level, in the context of economics. Although I have always been interested in the subject, I haven't had a formal education in it before (did I say that I was brought up in a conservative education system?). But now, I am ready to break the barriers with my new status as a M.A. student in the economics department at UConn.

buzzword of the moment:
STAGFLATION

Root: simultaneous STAGnation of the economy (slow growth and increased unemployment) and the increase of inFLATION (rise in prices)

Is it a full-blown stagflation like in the late 1920s or  a situation like in the 1970s that we are experiencing now? is the object in mirror closer than it appears?
