Verdun was a fortified French garrison town on the River Meuse. The Germans attacked Verdun on 21 Feb. 1916, both sides fought back and forth for control. On 18 Dec. 1916, the French defeated the German advance. Verdun is listed as the longest battle of the First World War. Both sides lost nearly 500,000 men each.
