Title: The Search for Irony: Accessing the Reading Process in Action
Abstract: This presentation will discuss how a reader utilizes the linguistic devices within the lyrics of "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette while activating and employing schemata to make inferences and achieve a coherent understanding of the text-as-presented. It examines the relationship between cohesion and coherence in "Ironic" and includes think-aloud data collected from groups of students who were asked to read and process the song lyrics and discuss the "irony" in them. Finally, the role of schema theory will be linked to implications for reading instruction and comprehension.

Speaker #2: Roberta Welch (Toyo Gakuen University)
Title: Individualised Long-Term L2 reading
Abstract: Individualized Long-term L2 Reading" is a presentation that outlines some factors that keep a JSL learner motivated to continue reading.
