ABOUT THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The Daughters of the American Revolution is an organization of women who are directly descended from persons who aided in establishing American Independence.  The Society was founded October 11, 1890 and incorporated by an Act of Congress in 1896.  It is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer service organization.  There are approximately 180,000 members in over 3,000 chapters throughout the United States and in several foreign countries.  The Society has celebrated more than 100 years of service and admitted over 709,000 members during that time. The National Headquarters is located in Washington, DC.  The DAR Motto is:  God, Home and Country. The DAR Objectives are:

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Perpetuation of the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence by the preservation of historical relics and locations, and of records of their individual service.

PROMOTION OF EDUCATION

To carry out the injunction of Washington in his farewell address to the American people, "to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge," thus developing an enlightened public opinion, and affording to young and old such advantages as shall develop in them the largest capacity for performing the duties of American Citizens.

PATRIOTIC ENDEAVOR

To cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.
