Vernon Corea supported the Autism Awareness Campaign
Vernon Corea an outstanding broadcaster, once dubbed,'The Golden Voice of Radio Ceylon,' died in New Malden in Surrey on September 23rd 2002.Vernon was the son of the late Canon Ivan Corea and Ouida Corea of Sri Lanka.Canon Ivan Corea was Vicar of St.Luke's Church in Borella.Vernon Corea had a distinguished career in public service broadcasting in Sri Lanka and in the United Kingdom spanning 45 years. Vernon was a pioneering broadcaster - he joined Radio Ceylon as an Announcer in 1957, he left the station in 1975 as Director News of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

Vernon and his wife Monica were involved with religious broadcasting working for Radio Worldwide, the radio arm of WEC in the UK. In 1977 Vernon was invited to present the first Asian radio program in English, 'London Sounds Eastern' on BBC Radio London. In 1978 he was appointed the BBC's first Ethnic Minorities Advisor.

Vernon was totally committed to the Autism Awareness Campaign in the UK because of his grandson, Charin.

He lobbied parliamentarians and broadcasters. Vernon attended the historic debate on autism launched by Linda Perham MP on 9th January 2002 in the House of Commons. He wrote prayers for Autism Sunday held on 6th January 2002 to mark Autism Awareness Year.(Please see www.ukautism.com) His prayers were used by churches of all denominations in the UK. He attended the first ever Autism Service at St.Paul's Cathedral in London on 10th February 2002.

He spoke up for people with autism because he loved his grandson. Vernon was a committed Christian and he always said that Jesus loved every single autistic child and adult. They were all precious in His sight.

Vernon Corea wrote special prayers for Autism before he passed away in 2002.
