Each year, many Irish Setters are turned into animal shelter or local dog
pounds for a variety of reasons. Sometimes because of the
death of the caring human, because of a divorce, because of
a change of life style, and sometimes because they are lost or abandoned.
All too many times, an Irish Setter enters rescue because it was placed in an inappropriate
home or with persons who
did not understand the special needs of an Irish Setter.
IRISH SETTER RESCUE is a volunteer group of Local ISCofGKC
Club Members and ISCA Rescue Members
who help Irish Setters in
need. The Rescue group will arrange with the shelter or family
to take and care for the Irish. During the initial foster period,
club members evaluate the Irish Setter's health and temperament. When necessary, the Club will obtain
veterinary care for the Irish. During the foster period, club members evaluate the dog to determine
if the Irish has special needs that must be satisfied during placement.
Because the ISC of GKC supports responsible breeding, all rescue Irish setters are spayed or neutered prior
to placement with a new family. In general, the ISC of GKC rescue committee requires that Irish Setters be placed
in homes that have a fenced yard to protect the safety of the Irish. Adopting homes are required to sign a contract
agreeing to return the Irish Setter to the Rescue Program if for any reason, the adopting family can not keep the Irish.
An adoption donation is required to cover the cost of medical care, neutering, and other costs to the club. Generally, a
minimum adoption fee of $75 is requested.
If you wish to place an Irish Setter into the Rescue Program, please contact one of the local coordinator. If you
are interested in adopting a rescued Irish Setter, please contact one of the local rescue contacts or complete the on-line
adoption form. Following contact with Irish Setter rescue, a club member will conduct a screening of prospective homes to
determine if the family understands the requirements for training and loving a rescue Irish Setter.
Irish Setter Rescue will neither accept nor place any dog who is temperamentally unsafe or who has
shown aggression towards people in the past.
