Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

Historically hypnosis it seems has been traced back to Egyptian times, in the 3rd century. The Demotic Magical Papyrus which was discovered in the 19th century in Thebes seems to give clear instructions for an hypnotic induction to occur:

"You take the boy and sit him upon another new brick, his face being turned to the lamp and ask him to close his eyes and recite things which are written above down into the boy's head 7 times. You make him open his eyes. You say to him: "Do you see the light, when he says to you: “I see the light in the flame of the lamp," you cry at that moment, saying "heoue" 9 times. You ask him concerning everything that you wish.” Source Hidden Depths -The Story of Hypnosis.

Much later, Doctor Franz Anton Mesmer from Austria, in the 18th century, could it seems cure people of their ailments without using surgery or any type of medicine. He believed that he had access to a magnetic force which could regulate the flow of magnetic fluids in people to produce cure. His healing method came to be known as Mesmerism. Mesmer treated people from all backgrounds and used different method to cure his patients. For example he would fill a large tub with water, containing bottle of iron filings. Protruding out of the tub were iron rods which were held onto by his patients. Many had violent reactions and fainted others fell into deep sleeps which would cure the patients of their ailments. Mesmer became very popular in Paris, the French government offered him enough funds to set up a clinic however as Mesmer refused to be supervised by the representative of the government, in 1784 a Commission was set up to investigate mesmerism. The Commission concluded that Messer’s method and his theory on magnetic field were just a figment of the imagination .Mesmerism was therefore dismissed as a worthless theory. Despite the many cures that had occurred throughout its practice.

James Braid, (1795-1860) was born in Fife, studied medicine at Edinburgh, and settled as a surgeon in Manchester. James Braid is often considered as one the father of Hypnotherapy. He became interested in Mesmerism as a result of watching Lafontaine (1803-1892) a Stage hypnotist who drew his knowledge from mesmerism. Lafontaine was known for his theatrical approach and demonstrated Hypnotic phenomena with susceptible member of the audience. As a result James Braid began experimenting on himself and was very soon giving lectures and public demonstrations. James Braid's work was met with criticism from Mesmerists and on the other hand with scepticism from his audience again in spite of the evident positive results his technique were achieving. However Within two years of his first encounter with Lafontaine he published a very comprehensive book called Neurypnology. Braid's primary induction technique would involve the subject to focus on a small bright object held very close (20cm-40cm away from the eyes) and as the eye lids shut the altered state of awareness would begin. "Hypnotism" - "hypnotist" and "hypnotise” were first coined by James Braid.

Milton H. Erikson (1901-1980) the father of modern Hypnotherapy. He had a unique understanding of the human psyche .As a result he radically changed the way hypnotherapy was to be practiced. His perception of the world was already different when he was a young boy. He was colour blind and could only see the colour purple, which it seems gave him much pleasure and chose to wear purple suits and ties from time to time. He was also tone deaf and dyslexic. Furthermore, as if this was not enough, he suffered from two bouts of polio which he survived in spite of the doctor’s prediction of his imminent death. His unique experiences of the world and challenges paradoxically not only gave him the determination to heal himself, but led to a life time dedication, to the research of the relativity of human perception and hypnosis.

He first studied medicine, psychology and specialised as a psychiatrist. He became a professor of psychiatry and founded the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. As Milton Erickson’s fame spread he spent much of the later part of his life giving lectures and seminars on his approaches to, hypnosis, hypnotherapy and psychotherapy.

Whereas previous hypnotic tools had involved the use of fixed inductions techniques. He pioneered a new approach by not only using metaphors and anecdotes to help his patients he would also consider their age, personality, experience, intellectual capacities, social and physical environment. Furthermore he was very aware of the importance of the client's life away from the consulting room. With this information he was very successful at facilitating changes in his clients. This though meant that he had to be very flexible with every client, as he saw them as unique individuals, with unique needs and adapted his approach accordingly never repeating a session in the same way. Maybe even more significant was his firm belief that everyone had within them all the life learning experiences to achieve their goals and heart's desire as though we were all born with a unique formulae or frequency that needed to be decoded. Yet it could only be deciphered by the client as only they could understand the nature of their predicament this meant that hypnotherapy had turned a corner: Clients were being empowered by using their own unique solutions during the course of Hypnotherapy.

What is Hypnotherapy ?

Clinical Hypnotherapy means using hypnosis to treat a variety of medical and psychological problems. It is estimated that 85% of people will readily respond to clinical hypnotherapy. It may even succeed where other, more conventional methods of treatment have not produced the desired results. When carried out by a professionally trained and skilled hypnotherapist, the benefits can be long lasting and often permanent. The human mind and body have unlimited potential to create, transform and heal. Growth, change and self healing occur within each of us naturally everyday. Yet, when for instance, we are facing daily negative thought patterns and beliefs about ourselves we tend to be physically or emotionally running on very low energy. Demotivated and depressed our natural responses become less and less effective. Since fear and helplessness are our emotional companions, our natural ability to motivate ourselves is almost non existent or short term lived. This is where Hypnotherapy can work effectively on several levels:

Step 1 you can by pass the critical part of the mind and allow new information to come in.

Step 2 you can identify and address the root cause of the problem and put the past to rest.

Step 3 you can eliminate limiting belief patterns and change your self image.

Step 4 you can install life enhancing self loving, confidence boosting thoughts and beliefs.

Step 5 you can feel the change occurring within you and experience life from a successful attitude.

Step 6 you can make naturally the practical external changes and manifest the life you want.

It is completely natural and safe, with no harmful side effects. Hypnotherapy is medically accepted to benefit the following conditions and more:

Quit Smoking Phobias Sleeping problems Self -reparenting skills
Nail biting Boosting self-confidence Inhibitions and fears Assertiveness skills
Weight control Compulsions Reduce Stress Free your Creativity
Study /sporting performance Emotional problems Pain management Heal relationship issues

It may be surprising to many to learn that we have all experienced trance states many times, for example as we drift into sleep or upon awakening. The experience of hypnosis is similar: neither asleep nor awake and a little like daydreaming with a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which you can naturally enter so that, for therapeutic purposes, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to your unconscious mind. In this way, hypnosis is an effective way of making contact with our inner (unconscious) self, which is both a reservoir of unrecognized potential and knowledge as well as being the unwitting source of many of our problems. It is a fact that no-one can be hypnotized against their will and even when hypnotized, a person can still reject any suggestion. Thus therapeutic hypnosis is a state of purposeful cooperation between the client and the therapist. No one can make you do anything you do not want to do. Even those people on television are willing participant and could at any time stop the process. It must be emphasized that what hypnotherapist do is by definition therapeutic. Stage hypnosis is very different as it is used to entertain and for fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during the session?

First of all there is a detailed consultation during which you are able to talk things over in complete confidence and give details of your problem(s). This is often therapeutic in itself. A course of treatment will then be suggested, the number of sessions that are required will depend upon a number of factors such as the type of problem, its depth and severity. Usually then hypnosis will be discussed with you and any questions you may still have about hypnosis answered. You will be asked to sit back comfortably and then led gently into hypnosis. The therapist voice will then lead you into a very deep state of relaxation it is normal to experience a sensation of heaviness or lightness in your limbs. The first part of the session is generally very pleasant. The therapist will have access to a wide range of techniques to help you with your issue and will use different techniques such as imagery working with the part or aspect of the problem that requires treatment Sessions can last between one hour to two hours depending on your requirements. It is also recommended to wear comfortable clothe to ensure greater comfort throughout the session.

Will I go to sleep?

No, although almost all hypnotists/hypnotherapists use the word 'sleep' during an induction, it is purely a signal to get the mind to relax very deeply, sometimes referred to as 'hypnotic sleep' You may look as if you are asleep but your mind will remain very clear and in control. In fact your will be in a state of heightened awareness focusing on your inner world and reality rather than unconscious. In the therapeutical context the aim of the hypnotherapist is to bring into the open your own inner wisdom and this can only be activated if you are fully conscious.

Will a moment arrive when I am not under control?

No, quite the opposite. This is the biggest, most widespread myth about hypnosis. Powerful changes are made but only ones that you want. In fact, you will enjoy a definite feeling of increased control. Nobody can be hypnotized against their will. There is a myth that weak willed or simpler people respond more easily. In fact, statistics show that hypnotisability usually increases with intelligence.

So how will I know I'm under?

People go in and out of trances every day and are not aware of it. Have you ever travelled from A to Z by car and wondered how you ended up at your destination? This was an altered state of awareness. You just feel mentally very, very calm and content, relaxed, focused, and alert, sounds initially become extremely intense as though planes or trains are literally in the room with us and then they drop as background noises. Another component is that everything slows downtime distortion is very common at the end of the session you might feel time went by unusually quickly or slowly. You may experience initially your throat becoming very dry and sometimes your body temperature will drop slightly. It is though a very relaxing and refreshing experience.

Will I remember anything afterwards?

Yes, almost certainly you will. Even people, who have been able to have operations under hypnosis, and have felt no pain, will often chat about the experience afterwards (and during!). Occasionally people recall very little or nothing, rather like occasions when you cannot recall much or any of a dream.

Stop Smoking - Letting go of Unwanted Habits

Being Naturally free from smoking feels like this ...

Remember how you felt before you started smoking . Your breath is fresh your hair and hands are naturally scented your clothe also feel freshly clean and beautifully perfumed .You can run for more than a few yards without loosing your breath. - If someone were to offer you a cigarette, you would say -"No thank you. I do not smoke." You do not feel the need to smoke when you are stressed or after meals. The truth is you handle life challenges head on without having to contract your body with a cigarette because this would mean nothing to you. Moreover you feel less stress all around and you are free of permanently feeling guilty for smoking...Instead you feel as though you can achieve anything you set your mind as your thoughts are crystal clear and your body feels great and energized. Your self esteem is high and you are confident in your being....

Is it really possible to stop smoking and never light up again ?

Yes, even though you may have tried and started again before, you can under hypnosis let go of this unwanted "friend". Hypnotherapy will help you first of all understand the reasons you smoke in this way we do not just deal with the external behavior but with the underlying causes. Very often you started as a way of appearing older or through peer pressure. Although initially you did not feel addicted to it but as you persisted and it became part of our life. you used it when we were feeling hungry, when you were feeling stressed out. Even when you were feeling happy to celebrate happy moments you used it to suppress your anger or your sadness, frustration...one day you realize the constant element and support in your lives has been this smelly friend. Having totally forgotten what it would feel like to be experiencing all of these moments without a cigarette....but even if we did stopped for a while in those crucial moments the memory and desire to smoke would come again and again until one day we surrendered to this unwanted friend maybe initially thinking we will not get hooked this time just one cigarette will not hurt! Unfortunately that is not how it works.

Hypnotherapy is considered the most effective technique to quit smoking. In the largest study ever done of 20,0000 people (published in the New Scientist in October 1992) nicotine patches, one of the most popular method used , still had a failure rate of more than 85%!!

Under hypnosis we can take care of your worst fears about quitting smoking, the most frequent being :

1 Fear of craving cigarettes.

2 Fear of putting weight especially among women.

3 Fear of loosing control emotionally.

How can Hypnotherapy directly help you quit smoking?

Under hypnosis we can take care of these fears and any other concern you may have. If anything after the session clients report feeling healthier than before within a few days . Extremely surprised at the lack of craving. And even though from time to time a thought about smoking comes up they just very soon forget about it and those thoughts start decreasing very quickly. Imagine being able to play football with your children or join a badminton team again. Waking up in the morning with a fresh mouth . Being able to really taste the delicious meals at your favorite restaurant. Never again feel like an outcast around other people or internally guilty ... Just free.... as though a burden has been lifted of you...Imagine what other things you may decide to do or enjoy with the enormous amount of money you will save each day. Because let's face it is a very expensive habit . You will save at least 1000 pounds per year and about 80 pounds per month minimum ... wow!

Hypnotherapy can help you become really clear about quitting and remain a non smoker thousands and millions of people have already used it successfully across the globe. May be you are waiting for the right time when I pass my exams, when I come back from my holiday, when my child is born ,when I change jobs, when I move house .... when is the right time for you to be free of this dangerous Habit? My advice to you is do not wait too long life is precious and you are worth it.

Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is chronic and persistent difficulty in either:

  • Falling asleep.
  • Remaining asleep through the night.
  • Waking up too early.

Insomnia can occur to us at any age, sometimes for a brief period of time, and we can handle it. At other times we have to turn to medication to be able to sleep. Everyday anxiety and stress, coffee, and alcohol are the most common culprits. About 25% of elderly people and about 15% of the general population suffer from Insomnia.

Hypnotherapy is a fast effective technique to deal radically and with very few sessions with Insomnia. More often than not when we suffer from Insomnia we have inadvertently programmed ourselves for "not sleeping" just by focusing night after night on whether we will sleep or not tonight. We become annoyed and frustrated and end up spending the night wide awake and this in itself can create insomnia.

We are all born with the natural ability to fall asleep easily. During the first phase of the night we just relax often during this phase we let go of the day to do list, gently allowing our mind to drift away and we fall asleep. We cannot however force ourselves to sleep it really happens naturally. Under hypnosis you can reeducate your mind to expect a good night's sleep. Hypnotherapy can help you let go as soon as your head is on the pillow and you can you can experience a deep sense of relaxation which then naturally turns into a deep sleep throughout the night.

The subconscious part of the mind does not know the difference between a real event and an imagined event for instance if you were to think about sucking on a lemon you would find yourself salivating and even feeling the acidity of a lemon in your mouth when you are only imagining this. This is why hypnosis works so well. Under hypnosis we can create new beliefs and your mind will take in on board and create in this way a new outcome i.e. sleeping through out the night.

Inner child or self- reparenting skills can radically boost your self esteem and self confidence

The keys to feeling good inwardly are Self knowledge and Self love

Both skills can be acquired through reparenting ourselves Inner Child work can help us :

  1. Understand ourselves
  2. Changing the way we speak about ourselves
  3. Taking better care of our bodies
  4. Rewarding ourselves more often
  5. Respecting our feelings and needs
  6. Become assertive
  7. Acquire great communication skills
  8. Handling anger and criticism
  9. Connect with our creativity and our life purpose
  10. Be in touch with our own inner wisdom
  11. relieve your stress levels and learn to relax

Inner Child therapy is the Art of returning to our true essence. It is a wonderful technique to increase our self esteem and boost our confidence. Inner Child therapy is based on the work of Alice Miller, Carl Jung, Art Therapy, Voice dialogue, Breathwork... When This inner dialogue occurs profound and long lasting changes follow.

We were all children once. Childhood shapes our personalities and lives, it is when our feelings of self esteem and self confidence evolve. If we are brought up in a loving, nurturing, stable and secure environment, where we are allowed to express our emotions, feelings, playfulness and and feel valued , we can progress happily and confidently into adulthood. Often, however this is not the case and the negative aspects of childhood permeate the rest of our lives. The inner child may feel happy, loved and cherished, or it may feel neglected, pushed to one side . A childlike part within us, the "inner child", remains there, hidden beneath the surface and more often than not feeling alone abandoned and disliked. Many of the problems we experience as we go through our lives may never be resolved unless we attend to our inner child and nurture it. Giving our inner child the love, belief in itself, support, self regard and confidence it may never have received properly as a child. It is the right of all children to receive such unconditional love and to feel good about itself, and the inner child is no exception.

Often, harmful or dysfunctional behavior we experience as adults, for example, bingeing, addictions, helpless feelings come out of nowhere all of a sudden uncontrollable or so it seems. This is an example of an unhappy inner child, an immature, sometimes reckless part of us that has always been disliked and pushed away. Another way our inner child might make herself/himself present is through illness often I have found that behind an illness there is hidden a little one who has not been heard or taken into account and has a last resort affects our life so that we slow down and begin to pay attention to our inner reality. Inner Child Therapy is, in effect, about healing, listening, protecting and encouraging, like a loving parent. When this little self feels supported and understood "magic" happens and our inner wisdom allows us to move deeper and to expand. Lucia Cappacione explains in her book, 'Recovery of Your Inner Child', that unless we do our inner child work we expect other people to take care of it for us, to rescue us, and this unfortunately disempowers all of us.

A healthy sense of self-esteem, self-efficacy and confidence are qualities that our care givers may or may not have fostered in us whilst we were growing up depending on their parenting skills and emotional availability. However whether our care givers were equipped to help us is irrelevant now. The great news is we can do it for ourselves, some of it we can handle ourselves, other parts might require the help of a specialist. Particularly if you feel helpless or like a victim or have strong procrastinating behavioural patterns or a self-sabotaging part which does not really allow you to move forward.

Working one on one with a hypnotherapist

Why is hypnotherapy such a powerful tool to boost self esteem and self confidence?

The human mind and body have unlimited potential to create, transform and heal. Growth, change and self healing occur within each of us naturally everyday. Yet when we are facing daily negative thought patterns and beliefs about ourselves we tend to be physically or emotionally running on very low energy. Demotivated and depressed our natural responses become less and less effective. Since fear and helplessness are our emotional companions, our natural ability to motivate ourselves is almost non existent or short term lived. This is where Hypnotherapy can work on several levels:

Step 1 you can by pass the critical part of the mind and allow new information to come in.

Step 2 you can identify and address the root cause of the problem and put the past to rest.

Step 3 you can eliminate limiting belief patterns and change your self image.

Step 4 you can install life enhancing self loving, confidence boosting thoughts and beliefs.

Step 5 you can feel the change occurring within you and experience life from a successful attitude.

Step 6 you can make naturally the practical external changes and manifest the life you want.

Hypnotherapy is also very effective technique to raise your sense of self esteem and self confidence. Creating awareness is the first step to understanding ourselves. Sometimes we believe that we are not good enough, that we are not as capable as the successful people in our lives. During our childhood we may have suffered through lack of affection or been present to difficult situations or people who may have unconsciously frightened us or put us down or verbally and physically abused us. At other times the mere absence of our parents is enough for a child to internalize that they are not valuable as there was no one really present to meet our needs or give us praise and positive guidance in a loving and supportive way. This is enough to leave us bereft of a healthy sense of self esteem and feelings or thoughts of unworthiness might tend to override any attempt at improving our lives or just enjoying being in our life content and secure within it.

When we do not address this issue the gap widens inside between our ideal self and the person we are being. Lacking in self esteem will stop you from asking for your rights to be respected. It will stop you from asking the man or woman you would like to get to know better to go out with you. It will stop you from asking for a pay rise or simply saying No to people who request your time or money or favors. People in "authority" will override your needs not necessarily because they are being unkind but rather because you are giving your power away. Allowing yourself to be clear and put boundaries when people trespass your needs not only boosts your sense of self esteem but a deeper trust in yourself expands in other areas of your life.

Under hypnosis you can communicate to the unconscious part of your mind deeply empowering messages and see tremendous changes in your behaviour often the gap between you and your success is a new belief system that supports you 100 percent. A belief system that says you can do it, a belief system that enhances your whole sense of confidence that empowers you to take a new set of actions that could lead to your success. Whether you want to be a writer, or confident in your parenting skills or great at speaking in public or just confident enough to be who you really are. Feeling safe enough within to express yourself without having to feel fear of disapproval for voicing your preferences or real views. Self confidence begins in your mind and can be released in your everyday life.

Receiving support in a group with a facilitator

Receiving group support has many advantages and very powerful way to produce positive results very rapidly. As you have the built-in support of people who understand and care about what you are trying to do. Although many people are initially frightened of groups, opening up can seem difficult, this initial fear is very often overcome after attending the first group session. The group situation gives the participants the opportunity to meet, authentically, and raises the energetic level of the group as a whole. Each individual receives the support they need in their specific issues. Life skills can evolve through relating to others in a non-judgemental space. In my experience participant find it liberating as sometimes for the first time they can allow themselves to feel and share with others their inner reality. Participant have often first received individual attention in some form of therapy and then decide to put their learning into practice in the safety of a group.

Phobias, Fears & Anxiety

"My heart start beating so fast .... it feels as though I cannot breathe. I start to choke .... I can feel the sweat in my hands and forehead. I get this dizzy feeling and I have to sit down or lye down .It feels as though I am going to die... I do not want other people to see me like this so I go and hide until it passes..."

This is how people react generally when they are suffering from a phobia.

By definition a phobia is an irrational type of fear whereby the person genuinely really believes that what they dread the most is actually going to happen. This in turn means that they cannot allow themselves to get inside a plane, or go outside of their home (Agoraphobia), or drive a car, or perform a task privately or publicly etc... Phobias affect people of all ages, from all walks of life and in every part of the world fortunately hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool and a safe approach to deal with a phobia or strong fear, essentially because under hypnosis your mind can conceive of doing things which you would in a conscious state deny or dismiss. The part of you who wants you to be able to overcome your phobia or fear can finally have its space and be heard.

The types of phobias or strong fears that can be overcome under Hypnosis are:

Specific Phobias:

In the case of specific phobias as the name implies, people experience extreme reactions only towards one specific type of situation or objects. Although these specific phobias tend to be more easily managed as they do not present an everyday threat to our well being and can most of the time even be totally avoided. For instance a common fear of snakes might never become a problem unless you move to Africa. Other seemingly less intrusive phobias can however curtail our enjoyment of life such as fear or Flying or Driving and even though we might prefer never to take a plane again there are absolutely no reasons at all to believe that you have to be at the mercy of these fears. These are a few examples where Hypnotherapy has made a huge difference when people have chosen to face their phobia:

  • Fear of animals or insects etc...
  • Fear of enclosed spaces (Claustrophobia)
  • Fear of heights (Acrophobia)
  • Fear of flying
  • Fear of driving

Social Phobias

A person suffering from a social phobia fears being watched or humiliated while doing something in front of other people. As a result she/he may avoid entering any situations where being seen or judged may occur. The most common social phobia is the fear of speaking in public. In extreme case people may refuse to improve their career prospect because they know oral presentations will be expected of them. Many people have a generalized form of social phobia, in which case they experience fear during interpersonal interactions. This makes it difficult for them to go to work or socialize at all. The following are examples of social phobia that can be treated under hypnosis:

  • Fear of interviews
  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of eating a meal in front of other people
  • Stage fright
  • Drinking a cup of coffee
  • Buttoning a coat

Agoraphobia and Panic attacks

Agoraphobia is the fear of being alone in any place from which it would be difficult to flee or help would be unavailable should the need arise. People with agoraphobia avoid at all cost being on busy streets or in crowded stores, churches, public transport , in extreme cases they literally never live their home because that is where they feel safest. If they do go out of their home they express great distress and might require the presence of a familiar face. The onset of agoraphobia often occurs after they first suffer from a spontaneous panic attack feeling initially the heart beat very fast, sweaty palms, shortness of breath, and a sense of deep terror. Since the panic attacks seem to occur randomly and without warning, this makes it impossible for the person to predict what will trigger the next attack. As a result of the unpredictable nature of the panic attacks, makes going to any public place or facing any situation where these attacks have taken place something to be avoided More women than men tend to be afflicted by this condition. Seeking help as early as possible is highly recommended. Hypnotherapy can help alleviate these symptoms.

What are the Symptoms?

Phobias can interfere with your ability to work, socialize and go about your daily life. It may focus on something as common as germs or they may arise whenever you are alone at home. A phobia that interferes with daily living can have a seriously debilitating impact in your ability to lead a normal life. The most common symptoms are:

  • Feeling of panic, dread, horror, terror.
  • Overwhelming reactions which take over your thoughts and behaviour and are uncontrollable.
  • Your heartbeat is accelerated, shortness of breath, shivering or trembling and an overwhelming desire to run away from the situation.
  • Extreme measures are taken to avoid the object of your fear or dreaded situation.

How can Hypnotherapy help you?

Hypnotherapy can allow you to return to your care free feelings prior to the onset of the phobia your body can naturally be reprogrammed to feel relaxed and comfortable in those very situations that used to upset or frighten you. By being exposed to the object of your fear under hypnosis you will gradually feel more and more relaxed sometimes even end up caressing snakes, holding them around your neck. Enjoying the company of people around you totally feeling relaxed in crowded places and giving the most enthusiastic talk you could ever dream of giving. Our body is equipped with infinite possibilities to respond to even the most adverse circumstances. Our bodies identifies and eliminates efficiently toxins even cancer cells on a daily basis. The discovery of neurotransmitters established the scientific proof for the mind- body connection. Neurotransmitters which are released in response to thoughts and feelings not only bathe every cell in our body but they also control the functions of our cells. This connection directly impacts our abilities to heal ourselves. As a result when your body and mind are in alignment profound changes can occur. Hypnotherapy ensures that the repeated negative physical mental and emotional reactions to the object of your fears are eradicated allowing you to be free and enjoy life.

BEING AND STAYING SLIM THROUGH HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

" A Thousand thanks....I feel more relaxed about my body I feel beautiful everyone is noticing the difference. Since therapy began I have now completely changed the way I look at food and no longer eat for the wrong reasons. I feel that the emotional work we did together has reconnected me to something that was lost inside. I feel so different I love myself today, I love my body I do not feel I have to control everything and everyone at all times or would even attempt to... I have even started dating again I did not know that my parents divorce had had such deep impact on the way I used to feel about myself. I did not realise I was using food to protect myself... Having stopped playing those negative tapes in my mind all together has turned my life around..."Anne Kleyman, Lawyer"

What is the secret to being slim and staying slim?

How long have you been trying to loose weight? How many diets have you already tried? It seems that there is ample evidence to suggest that in the long term dieting does not work ... Dieting does not work because whether you do it for 1 week or 1month you will put the weight back on as soon as you stop. It seems as though using your will power will only carry you for so long. The moment you drop the watchfulness you will start wanting to eat anything and unfortunately a sugar addiction can re-establish itself within three days.... Deciding to take a long term approach by eating a little bit of everything in moderation is a much more relaxed and realistic approach. In the long run the body does not like feeling as though it is being starved. We feel psychologically deprived and punished when we diet this does little for our self esteem.

Most importantly it seems that when we are not getting anywhere with our own solutions and we decides to look at this issue from a psychological perspective, some of us start discovering that we use our food for a variety of reasons totally unrelated to healthy nutrition for the body. Some people discover that they use their food to hide from the world as they feel uncomfortable about themselves they find a reason to stop themselves from fully being part of life. Other people use their food to punish themselves for the guilty or shameful feelings they want to supress in spite of their innocence or the loving compassion they would give to their friendsunder similar circumstances. Other people use their food as comfort food to ease the pain of the loneliness or void they fill inside. It seems that If you really want to be able to shift the weight you may need to look at the reasons you are overeating in the first place sometimes it will be obvious at other times this will need to be discovered. Although knowing why we overeat does not in itself provide enough leverage to change naturally our eating habits it will help you find the way to heal old emotional wounds that may need to be addressed. When you feel good inside it shows on the outside. To be able to end the struggle with weight loss it might be time to understand and accept that for some of us the issues concerning our weight is not just linked to our eating habits or the amount of exercise we do but rather and most importantly to our emotional sense of wellbeing.

Of course a sedentary lifestyle, overeating, or eating the wrong types of foods, the stresses of daily demands put upon us are all contributing factors. Moreover understanding that after pregnancy as well as after 35 years of age our bodies need extra help releasing excess fat is valuable information...Allergy testting is also highly recommended. But It seems that for the men and women who are motivated and love their bodies in the first place when changes in their lifestyles are required they make them. The balance is redressed very easily because they are not using the food they eat as an emotional buffer.

The issue becomes much more complex when we use our food to deny ourselves the real feelings of loneliness, sadness, grief, anger, depression and despair etc... that may be just beneath the surface and feel far too overwhelming. If you are dissatisfied with certain aspects of your life it might be time to confront these issues. To a certain extent we reenact our childhood by abandoning ourselves in the same way we were abandoned by our care givers. It takes courage to address a childhood filled with moments of emptiness or sadness etc... which come to visit us in adulthood. Yet this is the good news, facing the music and deciding to enter a journey to return to self love and self understanding is a path which can give you a greater sense of self worth and greater long lasting results in leading a healthy lifestyle. Therefore loving your body and your life. This in turns allows the changes to your eating habits to occur naturally because the urge to suppress your feelings is no longer present. You feel very relaxed about yourself and your body reflects this... feeling in charge of your life and feeling beautiful are great rewards.

Emotional support is available in many forms whether you choose to join a group or receive individual attention depends on your preference...Taking action is the way out of the struggle...These are a few questions that might help you decide whether you could do with some support to heal emotionally.

Issues to look at :

Do you overeat when you feel out of control or very excited?

Do you eat in between meals even though you could not possibly be hungry?

Do you buy impulsively snacks?

Do you put off starting looking after yourself for tomorrow?

Do you feel as though you are responsible for the way other people feel and reach out for food every time it seems people are angry with you or disapointed?

Do you feel alone as though no one cares?

Do you have fun in your life or does it feel empty and void of any real passion or purpose?

Do you love yourself when you look in the mirror?

Do you feel guilty most of the time?

Do you fear people and have obssessive thoughts about what they might think about you or do?

Regression and Past Life Regression Therapy

How can Past Life Regression Therapy help you?

Do you feel stuck in your life as though you are going round in circles for ever, facing the same issues over and over again?

Do you feel an unexplainable fear paralyses you to the extent that you cannot achieve your goals and dreams?

Are you overweight since a very early age?

Do you suffer from some physical chronic symptom or phobia which you cannot explain in this lifetime?

Are you stuck in your personal relationship and spend more time in power struggles rather than enjoying each other's company? Do you feel as though you may have been together before, is it difficult to leave yet you do not really know why...?

How prosperous do you feel? Do you feel as though there is never enough time, love, money for you? Do other people always come first etc...?

Reincarnation has been part of many religions for hundreds of years. For millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Sufis it still plays a central part in their faith today. Although there is no direct mention of reincarnation in the Bible, it was it seems removed from the Christian religion in AD 325 by the Roman Emperor Constantine at the Council of Nicea. According to Eastern Philosophy we carry in our etheric bodies the physical memories of old wounds and these affect us unconsciously. It seems that Kirlian Photography has actually proven the presence of the Etheric body. Moreover, it is suggested that the decisions we make about life at the moment of our death are also carried through into the next life to be cleared and healed . Of course our problems could very well have been created in this life, and regression into this life is sometimes all that is required. Sometimes, however, past life therapy is our only resort, the core issue might still be blocked back in time into a previous life.

Past life regression can help us take a quantum leap on our journey to self discovery. It is not necessary to believe in reincarnation to benefit from this form of therapy. Once in an altered state of awareness we can allow unresolved issues to come to the surface and heal them. Remembering, processing and integrating the residual memories that lead us to make certain negative decisions about ourselves and others, frees us to experience our full potential in the area or aspect of our life that was previously stuck.

Case study :

I had the privilege to work with Emily (this is not the client's real name for confidential reasons). Emily came to me because she felt stuck in her personal relationship and wanted to find out whether she and her partner had previously struggled through similar issue together which was a serious lack of communication and a certain level of unexplained apprehension at leaving the relationship altogether. Now when Emily came to the session I felt curious and interested, for no apparent reason, in Emily's weight and body language. I noticed that she was really overweight for her height, but in a way that felt "stuck as though her body had been filled up from her ankles to her throat". During the session Emily went into a past life where she was a young adolescent female who had stolen some apples from a nearby village and felt that she had died in jail of starvation, in the Middle Ages. She could remember the stench that permeated the place as well as the despair that took over when she realized that no one would come to rescue her...

As is usual during all sessions we went through the cleansing and healing process, and she discovered that the main core beliefs she had taken through into this lifetime were "there is not enough for me..." and "no one loves me". 3 months later, I met with Emily, who was looking slimmer, and she shared that, soon after the session, she had begun losing weight naturally without any effort on her part. Not long after that she left her partner and started a new happier life with another man. It is interesting to notice that although, in this case, there was no mention whatsoever in her past life about any intimate relationship, she still moved out of the relationship in her current life.

What happens during the session?

The pace of the session is directed by you. This means that we take the session at a pace which is manageable and safe for you. Remember the aim is to heal in mind body and spirit. The session is divided in two parts: the first part is about retrieving the past life which still holds a significant amount of energy for the client in this life, the second part is about cleansing, healing and releasing any unfinished business. This is not a painful process, it may feel uncomfortable at times but never more than if you were watching a movie on TV and felt moved or touched by the characters, sometimes choosing to let the feelings rise to the surface, at other times choosing to be a witness. The aim is to let go and live a life free from past wounds. The amount of sessions required depends on each individual case however the method used is very safe and complete as any issue raised is taken care of during the session.

Feedback from Clients

Doctor Sanjay Choudhury -Harley Street-London

"I am very impressed by Isabelle Real's results with some of the patients who chose to be treated by Isabelle. Hypnotherapy and Hypno-Rebirthing are complementary medicin treatments which can create very positive long lasting results. I have seen patients recover very quickly and heal where other more conventional treatments have failed to provide such radical outcomes. I feel your work should be supported and will keep on recommending your services"

An Insomnia client after two sessions, 1995:

"I thought I would never be able to sleep again throughout the night and I felt too young to spend the rest of my life on sleeping tablets. Hypnotherapy is a radical tool that worked so quickly for me I would recommend it to anyone who is having a stressful time or sleepless nights like me."

Kevin, Shop Manager, 30 years old.

Stop smoking course, 1995:

"At first I was quiet sceptical during the session because I thought I would be unconscious and somehow wake up from some deep unconscious state so when the session ended although I felt very relaxed and positive I was not convinced it had worked... but the point is it took me a day to realise I had no desire to smoke at all. It was so easy."

Ian Parsons, Musician, 33 years old.

Emotional intelligence development course, 1996:

"Thank you so much Isabelle during the course of our sessions I have learnt a tremendous amount about myself I have learnt that I cannot ignore my feelings and that addressing conflicts from a fair stand point as it were is much more empowering than harbouring resentment towards the people in my life I learnt that I have a right to be and feel what i feel and that i am still a lovable person maybe most significantly I have learnt to follow my own intuition and this has given me a lot of trust in myself."

Jane Bower, Nurse, 34 years old.

Weight loss course, 1996:

"I feel great, I feel alive and above all I feel beautiful thank you I will recommend your services to all my friends."

Anna Gabriel, psychotherapist, 45 years old.

Anxiety and panic attacks course, 1995:

"The best money I have ever spent in years. It took only one session to get rid of my panic attacks I did not know I was afraid of speaking in public when my assignment came to do my first aural presentation I felt nervous but not excessively so yet when it came to deliver I could not open my mouth I was shaking and sweating I ran out of the room crying went into the toilet and let out a big scream but later on for some reason I started having panic attacks feeling palpitations in my chest every time I met with a lecturer and starting apprehending going to the supermarket in case I met any of my lecturers a friend was studying hypnotherapy and told me that Disable lived locally so I went and although I saw her for ten sessions because I also wanted to use hypnotherapy to let go of other issues after the first session it was the end of the panic attacks thank god for that...hypnotherapy works Isabelle makes you feel comfortable and safe from the moment you speak to her."

Sarah Taouali, University Student.

Fear of flying course, 1997:

"My daughter was getting married in Greece and requested the presence of her family as it is natural. Unfortunately she did not know that my fear of flying had stopped me and my husband from traveling for over 5 years now... I could not bear not to be present at my third child's wedding day. I did ask her if there was any chance of her changing her mind about it being in Greece but her husband insisted as their new family home would also be in Greece and it would be far too expensive for his family to fly to England anyway. I felt trapped and nauseous at the mere idea of having to get on a plane but my friend Sally said she had seen a famous hypnotist help a person get over it on television and it all seemed quiet serious. So out of despair rather than any thing else Decided to call the local hypnotherapist and find out what were my chances she seemed confident even though she could not tell me initially how many sessions it would take given the length of time I had had the problem for..... I am glad to say it only took 5 sessions I will be eternally grateful to Isabelle she changed my life ....I called her as soon as we landed .... I wanted to let her know it had worked!!!"

Suzie Martin, Housewife, 62 years old.

Self-confidence course, 1998:

"Thank you Isabelle you have made such a difference in my life not to mention my children and friends lives. I could not get a grip anymore. I was feeling more and more depressed and I was loosing friends very fast. Anger was the underlying reason for my unhappiness as I discovered during our sessions but I was educated to be nice and kind and it was certainly not ok to confront people or disagree so from a very early age I had learnt to agree please and conform to other people. I was very tied when I first met I sabelle and as we started looking at my frustrations and blockages I connected with all this anger that had been suppressed for so long and not allowed out of my system. It was time to sort it out. I learnt how to use pillows initially I even enjoy learning how to scream loud whilst music is playing in the background drawing and dancing my anger was an amazing experience I just feel much more alive. I am not angry anymore about the past and current anger does not seem so unmanageable it has taken 9 months to fully feel this way and it was worth every Penny. I love myself that is magical too thank you so much."

Stephanie, French Teacher, 40 years old.

Self-confidence at work, handling bullying course, 1999:

"I cannot thank you enough. Coming to your practice and having you by my side, feeling safe and heard has helped me tremendously in handling the bullying behaviour of my colleague and senior manager. I feel so proud inside I feel strong and able to handle anything or anyone that comes my way. Now that I have addressed this issue it has had a ricochet effect has I have decided to become self employed and create my own business."

Caroline, Website Designer, 27 year old.

Self-confidence course, 2000:

"From the moment we spoke on the phone I knew you were the right person for me. Compared to many other therapies this is by far the most effective one... I do not fear going out and meeting people anymore especially women ....Thank you."

Inner Child Course, 2002

"Overall a very practical course which on completion offered good tolls for carrying the work further. Enjoyed written dialogue most as it gave me valuable insights into my deeper self. I think what I personally found most difficult was finding the nurturing/protective parent within. I was so closely identified with the vulnerable and beaten child that I found this area was difficult. This course has impacted on my life in a very unexpected way. The course has opened up an area to which I was oblivious before. I felt 100% supported by Isabelle and Uwe who have a unique talent of totally accepting the person where they are and bringing them on their own unique journey in a gentle and encouraging way. Both are highly intuitive and balance this deep work with a sense of fun and humour. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to contact their inner-most self to further enrich and enhance the different areas of their lives."

Mary Primary School Teacher

"At the start of the one year seminar I felt like there was a brick wall around me and felt very alone and I entered the course because I wanted to love myself and accept all sides of myself.

On the first weekend I started realizing that things were about me not everyone else. Blinkers had been taken off me eyes – there was this other world. Being in the group I really resonated with some of them and often hearing what other people said made sense of what you were going through as well. Other people brought up issues that also applied to me. For the first time I really acknowledged my parents behaviour as unacceptable not covering up for them and, even though it was quite painful to do, it felt like the truth had finally been allowed out.

During the male and female energy weekend I connected with two energies within me and it turned out that the male energy was trapped and was causing disharmony, it was not allowed to have a voice and my inner female was dominating everything that was done. As we rebalanced these two energies my male energy is taking a more active role in my life, being more assertive, going after things. My female energy brings more love and nurturing.

During the sexuality weekend I realized that I was creating my sexual frustration, I was not giving myself permission to express myself and was not creating boundaries or open to my partner. I felt I could communicate, I did not have to suffer any longer in silence, and I could embrace my sexuality and have fun with it.

During the Hot-tub weekend I came to see that my mother did want me as a child although going through the re-birthing process was quite hard work I was able to change my perception and feelings around my birth. Around the campfire I felt angry towards another participant because she could so easily be comfortable with who she was and able to express herself in different forms. For the first time I was able to send her love and felt open and relieved that I could just do it and be able to change mood so quickly instead of staying stuck and feeling uncomfortable around her.

On the prosperity weekend I realized money is an energy - how you give things is how you will get them back. Also, the realization occurred that when you give something not to have an expectation about it coming back in a specific way and being able to receive gracefully. The money game showed me that when I gave with love I received more back.

On the last weekend I learnt how to say Good-bye and feel comfortable that I maybe will never see the other participants again, being able to enjoy completion and embrace endings in my everyday life. For instance one of the children I teach left to go on a school holiday earlier than the class so instead of saying Good-bye in class I made a special time for him, wished him well, told him about the beautiful qualities he has and gave him a big hug!"

Comments from participants on Self-esteem course - Love your Inner Child Group, 2004/2005:

Case Study One

"In retrospect I became aware that the topics covered on the course were very relevant to me life and as I used the tools I began to trust the process. For instance I was having problems with my friends because of lack of boundaries. My friends would permanently tell me what to do almost giving me instructions on how to live my life and turn up at my door step anytime. So even though I felt very guilty essentially because they came to ask for my sympathy I felt I was closing the door on them but I realized that I had to come first and the course helped me in asserting myself by expressing needs for space and understanding. Before the course I was quite unaware of my own needs and did not really know what my own needs were in many areas of my life. Because I was coming from a people pleasing state of mind and I now know that only I can fulfill them, no one else could do that for me.

Another reason I joined the course was that I was in the middle of a relationship breakup and found, initially, that the group support was comforting. I found that my inner child was very attached to him and that this is what was creating the turmoil and my indecision by the end of the course though that relationship turned into a friendship and my inner child feels sad about it but the boundaries are very clear. Before the course I could not understand my confusion around this issue. As I understood my Inner Child's attachment and fears I could reparent and reassure her that I would look after her.

Since I connected with my angry inner child not only can I feel my anger but also do something about it rather than feel depressed. My inner wisdom also told me that whenever I feel angry to remove myself from the situation and do some gardening until I calm down and then explain to the person later on what happened she told me this because it is the safest way for me to handle this situation because usually I would be overwhelmed by the other person, feel confused and upset and cry.

On the inner critic session we pin pointed a part of us that was being unreasonable that was being unreasonable I discovered that I needed to go at my own speed and felt under pressure and put down a lot by this critic. This made me realize that there was a part of me that was being cruel to my little girl and then we were asked to connect with someone in our lives who was also treating us this way. I realized that I must not’t put up with this critical voice internally or from the person in my life. As my Inner Child was allowed to vent her anger and to stand up for herself I felt very angry and as I connected with the other person’s energy it was easy to understand their view point and it really felt as though I had been heard by the other person even though we were just sitting in the other person’s energy.

On the course as we connected with our Inner Male: It’s energy told me I am here to look after you and this stopped me from being clingy and needing the male energy from outside of me. This also made me realize that when I previously thought I was in love it was a need to feel the protection and to feel whole. In letting go of this it gives me hope that I can have an adult relationship.

On the Prosperity Session we pinpointed negatives, unconscious thoughts I had about money: I feared I was not competent enough, I did not know my job well enough and I was not a good communicator. I then questioned who was telling me that I was incompetent and realized it was not real. For the following two weeks I just found myself felling no fear professionally and that opened a new possibility that I would be able to be successful so I put my prices up.

On the last session I noticed that my conversation with my Inner Child was more fluent and more rich. I felt internally guided as to which questions to ask because the answers to those questions were exactly what I needed to see and do.

When I connected with my spiritual child I received a lot of encouragement and lots of love; when I asked her whether I needed to let go of any relationships she told me to simply be myself.

Overall I found it a fantastic process as I connected with my Inner Child outside of the course on a daily basis. Throughout the course my Inner Child has taught me about self-love, I feel clear when she does not feel safe in a situation and I can address it, she also tells me when she wants me to buy her presents and my Inner Child understands when I say no as long as I give an alternative possibility. When other people are also sharing it feels like you are not alone in your issues and listening to other people I remember feeling grateful for their presence. The laughter took away the seriousness of our issues and also allowed me to feel bonded to the group."

"Anna", Massage Therapist

Feedback from Beverley on her 10 Rebirthing sessions, March 2002:

"I chose rebirthing as I felt it was a gentle form of self-discovery using breathing to access deep-seated beliefs and forgotten traumas and encourage a more positive and confident frame of mind, a deep and profound form of healing. I chose Isabelle as my therapist because I was impressed by her patient, caring nature and knowledge not only of rebirthing but many other therapies. Initially she carefully explained the concept of rebirthing, how using this technique to revisit one's birth can help dissolve old patterns of behaviour, the feelings I might experience such as the movement of energy and tetany as well as the intense emotions and the breathing technique, connected breathing without any pause between inhale and exhale. She always made me feel safe and was at all times very attentive answering my queries and explaining techniques such as water Rebirthing and Water Rebirthing and Eye-Gaze and concepts such as the power of thought and the use of affirmations, both of which have encouraged me to cultivate a more positive state of mind. She has helped me understand and resolve deep-seated negative beliefs, change old patterns of behaviour, alter my perception of life and most importantly take."

Feedback from One Year Seminar course participants, 2003/2004:

“Since I starting this seminar changed house, job and boyfriend — all things that at the start I felt were near impossible; they seem to happen one after the other and I am excited about the future. On the course I enjoyed very much the sharing and being part of a group with like-minded people. This course is money well spent I highly recommend it.”

Susan, A Family Consultant.

Feedback from One Year Seminar course participants, 2003/2004:

The feedback form asked how the course has affected your life internally and externally. This participant did not leave her name on the form so I'll call her "Emma" who wrote:

"Being able to say No and not make it wrong, being able to say No and not make it wrong to be in integrity with myself and having the courage to take risks in many more areas of my life. The aspects of the course I enjoyed most were the sharing, the breathe, the drawing exercise on the sperm and egg made me realize that not all penetration means violence or violation." This participant did not wish to give her name so we'll call her "Elizabeth", Massage Therapist: "Internally the course has made me conscious of who I am and how I operate. It has given me the tools to transform myself and the relationships I have. In particular, it has given me the opportunity to have a relationship with my mother that I did not think was possible, I can create a loving space for both of us to hear one another and be heard. What I enjoyed most was sharing my issues in a group setting. On numerous occasions I found myself identifying with other members of the group who had similar issues. I found this to have enhanced my journey because what you thought were alone in experiencing, you had a net work of support to help you."

Caroline HR & Training Consultant in the City:

"This course has made a difference internally …..I am more serene and more in touch with my creative side. I found the job I was looking for because the course gave me the confidence and the spark for the interview. I loved the residential hot tub weekend, I loved the connection with other members of the group and how we journeyed together. We all have changed so much after the past few months that we have been working together."

Peter, Artist

"Since I have done this course I sleep better, I have a better understanding and feel better about myself. I have more choice at how I behave with others and realize that I could create more fun at college. I have a better understanding of my past conditioning getting in touch with the way it was playing itself out in the home environment. I can see how life has been a fight for survival realising how black and white it was in the way I was taught and moving away from that. I remembered my shame around my lack of social skills, not knowing how to ask for things, feeling threatened by other people and the intensity this feels like inside. I have to have a go at them to feel some power and how it kind of puts their power out. In the breathe I could see all my friends playing football but I could not see me, it was weird. The part I enjoyed the most was the art-related areas collages drawing and the spontaneity of the other participants".

Feedback from Miriam, Trainee Assistant on the One Year Seminar:

"This course has affected my life emotionally, mentally and physically. I feel that it has helped me feel more whole. This has affected my external life in turn. I am more in my power as I am embracing all aspects of myself more and more. I am approaching life with more clarity and I trust that I have the resources within myself to deal with whatever I may encounter. Physically I have more heightened awareness regarding what my body needs are. It has been a true gift. I enjoyed watching the participants evolve and being inspired by them. I have enjoyed basking in the loving space created by a supportive energy. It has been very healing for me."

Feedback from the Inner Child Course 2004/2005:

"I have moved at the speed of light this year and this work is an integral part of my new world."

Jamie

"Thank you for holding such a safe and nurturing space for me to explore and free the child who for so long was imprisoned."

What is Breathwork and Hypno-Rebirthing?

Breathwork is a fantastic tool that can allow us to integrate any emotional trauma we have been exposed to. Let me repeat this our breath can help us restore our emotional, physical and mental balance and reconnect with our feelings of inner trust, innocence, self worth, self acceptance, clarity , vitality, Joy , abundance, enthusiasm...much more. The shifts in perceptions that seem to occur after working on ourselves with this wonderful tool are extremely beneficial to our lives as the changing process that seemed almost impossible at times begins to dissipate and new easier workable solutions are found.(See feedback )

Leonard Orr in the early 1970's introduced to the west this ancient technique originating from India. Whilst experimenting in a sauna and hot tub he reconnected with deep rooted thinking patterns stored in his body and mind. As a result he was able to help himself and others release their stored trauma. Leonard Orr had rediscovered that we have untold powers within us. With breathwork everything seems possible: stuck energies in our system begins to dissipate and allows room for the new.

The Five elements of breathwork were originated by Jim Leonard in the late 1970's, as a result of his research and experimentation with the rebirthing process. The five elements are all that is required for you to achieve emotional integration. The simplicity of this formula and technique often surprises the participants when they first engage with breathwork. Since the process is natural and organic it will enhance any other self improvement tool that you are already using. Breathwork can be used on its own or in combination with any other self development tool.

The Five Elements of breathwork are:

1. Conscious Connected Breath
2. Complete Relaxation
3. Awareness
4. Integration into bliss
5 Our Willingness is enough whatever we do is perfect.

The five elements work together and each supports the others to cause integration the first three will help you to connect with your issue at the emotional and cellular level. The fourth element provides the context shift that will facilitate integration and the fifth element reminds the breather that there is no way that they can do it the wrong way because each session is complete and unique and different in itself. But our willingness to release or let go or accept a situation is a very essential element it usually accelerates the process. The breathwork process is completely safe and natural.

Answers to the most common questions about breathwork that are asked at my workshops.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A BREATHWORK SESSION?

You will be expected to wear comfortable clothes so all parts of you body can breath fully. After you have shared with your breathworker the changes you would like to make in your life or any current issues which are making your life unhappy or any abundant or prosperous desires you would like to invite in your life you will usually lie down or sit down and start Consciously connecting your breath i.e. you will either breath solely through your mouth or nose continuously for usually at least 50 minutes. The breathing is relaxed, you breathe into all parts of your body and relax in the exhale and keep on breathing until you find your own rhythm rather as though you were imitating the sound made by the waves, when you walk along the seaside. The session is divided into three phases as follows:

  1. Activation: during this phase, the breathing is faster and heavier it allows your issues to rise to the surface.
  2. Process: during this phase, the breathing has found its own rhythm some people report that the breath was breathing them. In a way it is as though your issues are being cleansed away by the breath.
  3. Integration: your system has cleared all that came up you feel blissful sometimes, at other times profoundly relaxed, refreshed and back to yourself. Everyone has a different experience and would describe the experience in their own unique way.

CAN I DO BREATHWORK ON MY OWN?

Yes. Most people find that they can learn most quickly and easily with a trained breathworker, who can teach you in about 5 to 10 sessions depending on the desired level of support you would like to receive whilst undergoing a breathwork session. You may even want to try on your own first, however in my experience most people who have tried on their own before obtaining guided sessions report that they got only limited results.

HOW LONG DOES A SESSION LASTS?

A session usually lasts 2 hours during the first 30 minutes you will share with the breathworker your current concerns or issues you wish to address and you will then be invited to breath for a minimum of 50 minutes this is usually followed by a time for integration and reorientation or grounding.

WHAT CHANGES CAN I EXPECT?

Since breathwork eliminates suppression you can expect greater relaxation in situations which would have previously been stressful, a reduced tendency to struggle with your feelings, free flowing creativity, ending self sabotaging patterns, a willingness to take action and sort out situations which no longer serve your life, greater sense of self confidence and much more.... people often report having full access to all their emotions. Breathwork changes the way you interact with your negative emotions by allowing you to respond rather than react to the experiences you have in your life.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BREATH?

There is no real limit as to how many times you can have a breathwork session. Initially though it is recommended to have a session at an interval of 5 to 21 days between sessions. After they have learned people like giving themselves daily or weekly sessions.

HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP BREATHING FOR?

Once you have learnt how to use this wonderful tool using your conscious breath becomes part of your life and can be used whenever you wish to enjoy life and become even more effective in your daily activities or resolve any emotional issue.

HOW DO I KNOW IF ANY INTEGRATION HAS OCCURRED?

Although everyone experiences integration differently at different times, the shift in energy in your body is very evident and clear. Sometimes people feel more alive, sometimes they have a deep sense of relaxation, sometimes they feel more powerful, laughter is often present, and a feeling of peace and alertness can also be present. The experience is unique to each individual and each journey takes its own shape and colour...

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE INTEGRATED ANYTHING?

Sometimes you will have conscious insight or memory associated with the sensations that have been resolved during the breathwork session. At other times, it will be a physical or kinesthetic experience without any cognitive insights. In some cases you will only find out later what the session was about, when you start noticing how your life is different. Every session is different because different suppressed material becomes activated. Moreover, each integration enhances the next one. The holistic understanding of this process explains that through the use of this technique the life force or ki /chi energy helps loosen up stored blockages held in the four -body energy system i.e. emotional, physical, mental and spiritual thus working on all four levels at the same time.

WHAT IS HYPNO-REBIRTHING?

Hypno- rebirthing is the unique combination of two very powerful tool the power of trance with the power of the oxygen we breathe to create radical shifts in perception and release negative emotional experiences or traumas. Our body is equipped with infinite possibilities to respond to even the most adverse circumstances. Our bodies identify and eliminate efficiently toxins even cancer cells on a daily basis. The discovery of neurotransmitters established the scientific proof for the mind- body connection. Neurotransmitters which are released in response to thoughts and feelings not only bathe every cell in our body but they also control the functions of our cells. This connection directly impacts our abilities to heal ourselves. As a result when your body and mind are in alignment profound and radical changes can occur. Hypno-rebirthing facilitates this realignment and allows your system to create new positive solutions.

SHOULD I HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL OR A GROUP SESSION?

One on one sessions are usually recommended when you first start learning about breathwork Hypno rebirthing essentially because the breathworker can give you their full undivided attention as well as guide you through the process step by step and help you focus on the areas of you body your breath is not reaching, to a qualified practitioner this is very obvious, those areas are usually were the blockages to your wellbeing are located. It is recommended to have 10 individual sessions with a practitioner before you have group sessions particularly if you have never had any one on one attention with a therapist before or would feel unsafe in a group situation.

Once you are well acquainted with the technique then you can let yourself receive breathwork in a group. In a safe and loving environment, the power of sharing your issues and particularly your present feelings on its own offers a tremendous transformational power. The authenticity of each individual creates a precious connection in the group and the collective consciousness of the group often inspires deeper healing possibilities within each and every individual. During the breathing session the breathworker and his or her assistants will also be there to support you and keep the energy moving through the group, if at all necessary.
