Prototype Information
The GP30's were the first second-generation diesels on the Reading. Numbers 5501-5520 were delivered in 1962, and were the first units to be painted in the green and yellow scheme. As Reading was the first railroad to order the new GP30, unit #5513 became the first production model. Trucks, batteries and auxiliary generators were recycled from traded-in FT locomotives. In 1964, all GP30's were renumbered into the 3600-series. #5520 became #3600, and #5501-5519 became #3601-3619. Conrail inherited all 20 units and numbered them 2169-2187. Many of them lasted into the early 1990s, going through a cycle of retirement and reactivation when Conrail became short of motive power.

Unit #5513 was acquired by the Reading Company Technical and Historical Society in 1985 and has been restored to original Reading colors. At least seven others survive working for various shortlines and industrial railroads.
