International Physics Olympiad 2002

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual physics competition among high school students from all over the world and it has been taking place since 1967. The competition was first confined to Eastern Europe until the early 1970's when subsequently Western Countries began to participate. Thereafter, other countries from all over the world, including Indonesia, become members of IPhO. Each participating country sends in a delegation consisting of (at the most) five students and two supervisors (team leaders). Individual competitors sit for intensive examinations comprising three theoretical problems and two experimental problems. At the closing ceremony, the students will be awarded gold, silver or bronze medals or honourable mentions according to their achievements in solving all problems.

SELAMAT DATANG

The people and government of Indonesia welcome you to the 33rd International Physics Olympiad.

The 33rd International Physics Olympiad will be held in Bali from July 21st to 30th, 2002. The people and government of Indonesia warmly welcome the delegations from all countries to visit Indonesia and participate in the competition. Supported by the Ministry of National Education, this Olympiad will be organized by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), the oldest and most prestigious science and engineering university in Indonesia.

The involvement of Indonesia in the International Physics Olympiad began in 1993. The performance of Indonesian students as the ambassadors of the nation in the consecutive events is very convincing and satisfactory. This accounts for the appointment of Indonesia which is entrusted by the President of the International Physics Olympiad to organize this world competition from July 21st to 30th, 2002.

Considering the resources of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Dr Yahya Muhaimin, as the Minister of National Education, designated ITB as the organizing institute of the 33rd International Physics Olympiad and named Bandung as the host city. This was laid down in a record No 27688/MPN/2000 dated on September 13rd, 2000, of the National Education Minister (MENDIKNAS). However, the venue was shifted to Bali which is well-known as a world tourist destination in order that many more participants would be attracted to visit Indonesia.
