  About Indokids
A letter from Mary Jane Lowman, Chairperson of Indokids, Incorporated :

As all of you "old" students must know - Indokids didn't use to have any Board members at all. It was simply "Mrs. Lowman's Program" for years and years

and years! I gave birth to it, I raised it, and Mr. Lowman fertilized it with money from his own checkbook. When Mr. Lowman planned to retire, the fate of Mrs. Lowman's program was discussed with Dr. Lowry and at his suggestion, and with the help of Freeport lawyers, Indokids, Inc. was formulated -- a not for profit organization. Due to Federal laws, we were required to have a Board of Directors. The Board was selected in a very logical manner. Who had been very, very involved with Mrs. Lowman's program over many years? Maggie and John Quinn, who had fed and housed Michael for free for four years' and Mr. Lowman, who had been doing a host of jobs for Mrs. Lowman's program day Day One, (to say nothing about little extras like paying heavy-duty orthodontist's fees for students who have long ago forgotten how they ever arrived here in the USA.) The other helper that I always depended upon was Diane Nazarenko, former host parent of Agus Supomo and Liza Latief. For a short time, Joanne Flanagan from Mt. St. Joseph's Academy was a Board member, but when she left her Guidance position at MSJ, she also gave up her board position. All Board members are expected to do a lot of work for very little, or often no money. I think that the most important duty is one that is automatically assumed, and that is being a US "parent." We worry about our students, as any parent would. We anguished when they have problems or do not do well, we fret about TOEFL and SAT scores, we rejoice when they excel, we fuss when they do not. We remember their birthdays, graduations with cards and gifts. In addition, board members are expected to answer the phone in the middle of the night, pick up students at airports at midnight, use their own credit cards to pay for the hotel rooms for students who get stranded at airports and are traveling with no money. In addition, they are expected to accept calls from Indonesian parents who berate them for daring to expel their failing student from the Program. Board members must always keep Indokids Board members have freely and willingly offered the hospitality of their homes to visiting Indokids parents, picking them up at the airport, driving them around and making every attempt to see that their visit is pleasant and informative. Some of the visitors that we have warmly welcomed are the Nainggolans, the Kusnandars, the Marpaungs, the Sunyotos, Liz Latief, the Sidhartas, the Sandys and Tjin Rudianto. In addition, we look forward to the upcoming visit of Mrs. Stance Triwandono.
