More than 291,000 American women underwent surgery last year to get breast implants. Few of these women were fully informed of the serious risks involved. Yet there is increasing evidence that both silicone and saline implants can cause significant health problems. Local complications include rupture, capsular contracture and infection. Because they can interfere with mammography exams, implants pose a heightened risk of delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer. There also is evidence that new mothers who have implants are less likely to have an adequate supply of breast milk for their babies.
Breast implants do not last a lifetime. Studies have shown that after 10 years, the risk of rupture increases dramatically. In addition to the costs of the initial surgery, women must be prepared for additional surgeries resulting from complications, defective products, as well as periodic replacement.
Some doctors believe that silicone can act as an adjuvant and cause autoimmune illness or "Human Adjuvant Disease". Existing literature on the subject is conflicting and studies have generally been too short to adequately assess the risks. Notably, peer-reviewed studies do show that women's health improves after explantation. Many of us who have suffered from a wide range of autoimmune-related symptoms have experienced this improvement.
While we respect a woman's right to make personal health choices, we believe they should be based on ALL the available and accurate information. Decisions of this magnitude should not be based solely on plastic surgeons' and manufacturer's advertisements, or selective submission of short-term data (as manufacturers have done with the FDA).
Unfortunately, when it comes to health care, the consumer is placed in the position of "buyer beware".
The issue of breast implants, in particular, is fraught with emotion, money and politics. For this reason, we must educate ourselves, by reading all we can on the subject and talking to other women who have been through what we have experienced. And that is the purpose of this forum, that is hosted by both Implant~Info~Net and Human Adjuvant Disease Corp.
There is NO breast implant on the market today that is without risk.
