Latest update: Additional selections from arc 19, 11 April 2009.

The editors for the next issue of arc will be Ed Codish and Jerome Mandel. The topic for arc-21 is war and peace — a matter particularly appropriate locally and at this time by virtue of the neighborhood in which we live, but equally appropriate at all times, in all neighborhoods, and perhaps eternally. Contributions need not be limited to the literal and military meanings of the terms. More metaphoric applications to social, political, personal relationships also fall within the parameters of the topic.

The editors will consider poetry or prose in English focusing upon any aspect of this topic from any point of view. For prose, shorter pieces are generally more attractive. Authors keep copyright but assign IAWE rights to publish in arc, in future IAWE anthologies, and on the IAWE website. Translations must be submitted with the permission of both the translator and the original author (if the original work is still under copyright). The original should accompany the translation. Contributors will receive one copy of arc-21 and additional copies at a discount. Since arc is the only publication of the Israel Association of Writers in English and readers expect a compendium of Israeli writing, contributors should be citizens or current residents of Israel.

All submissions, in plain text or Microsoft Word, should be sent via email with arc-21 in the subject line to Jerome Mandel by August 15, 2009. His address is jeromemandel@yahoo.com The editors hope to make their decisions and notify contributors in the early fall and have arc-21 ready for production in time for the Israeli book fair and the Jerusalem book fair in February. Any adjustments (e.g., deadline extensions) to the schedule will be announced on the IAWE website.

About the IAWE

The Israel Association of Writers in English (IAWE) was established in 1980 to accommodate the growing number of Israeli writers whose native or preferred language is English. In 1982, we established an annual journal named Arc, and since 1999 we have been working together with the Israel Writers Federation to publish books.

Our objectives are to promote writing in English in Israel through publications and readings, and to act as a bridge between Israeli society and the cultures of other English-speaking countries. To this end we encourage translations from Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Yiddish, and the other languages of this country, we promote translations from English into Hebrew, and we endeavor to create multi-lingual dialogues whenever possible. Many of our members translate literature from Hebrew to English. Others are active in honing and promoting the work of younger writers in English in Israel.

Further projects include the hosting of visiting writers from English-speaking countries.
