YOU AND CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY

Chemical dependency is a disease affecting millions of people in this country. There are seven symptoms that make up the diagnosis for dependency. A person is dependent if he or she experience three of these seven symptoms.

CHECK BESIDE THE ONES THAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED.

TOLERANCE--You need to take an increasing amount of the substance to achieve the desired effect.

WITHDRAWAL--You feel discomfort if levels of substance use decline or stop.

LOSS OF CONTROL--You take more of the drug than intended or use for a longer period than intended.

OCCUPATION OF TIME--You spend a great deal of time preparing for use, using and recuperating from use.

LOSS OF ACTIVITIES--You stop or reduce many social, occupational or recreational activities.

NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES--You continue to use after experiencing negative consequences from your use.

EFFORTS TO STOP--You desire or try to stop or slow use but cannot.

These patterns are indicated by the official medical authority to classify a person as having the disease of substance abuse. Medical descriptions may provide you with important insight about your drinking or use of chemicals. However, reading how chemically addicted people describe their dependency may be easier to recognize. Have doubts about if you are an alcoholic? Take the Test

1. When I'd take that first beer, I'd have no intention of getting drunk. Sometimes I didn't but sometimes I just lost track.

2. My mind would constantly stay on getting high. It was what got me through the day.

3. I was always prepared to lie to my family in order to get what I needed.... sometimes to get me high.

4. I found three or four beers didn't do it for me anymore, I needed more to get a good buzz.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
