DVD Review

In the last few years technology has changed, the biggest technology jump is the invention of the Digital Versatile Disk or DVD, a DVD is a huge capacity disk (8 Gigabytes +) capable of storing hours of high quality and video and sounds as well as extra features such as cast and crew biographies, deleted scenes trailers, music videos and more, this section will be a review of spaced DVD’s and maybe other DVD’s that I own (if I can be bothered), these DVD’s will be reviewed on Quality of Picture, Quality of sound, Menus, Extra features and an overall mark, there will also be a review of the film.

Spaced – Series 1

This is the DVD I have been waiting for since episode 4 (my joint favourite) and it (kind of) lives up to its expectations. For a start the DVD is absolutely massive, it contains [deepbreath] All 7 episodes, deleted scenes, trailers, character and actor biographies, subtitles, out takes and the very funny commentary that is present on all 7 episodes. So all in all a very packed DVD.

Quality of picture

This is the most disappointing aspect of the DVD, but there is a good reason however, the first series was a bit of a hit or miss program and such the producers didn’t want to waste film quality film for a tv broadcast program that probably wouldn’t see the light of a shiny DVD, the quality isn’t dire but it doesn’t exactly scream the excellent quality of DVD that people expect but if you look closely in the Series 2 trailer you can see that they have used a better quality of film, wahay! All in all average.

Quality of sound

After the low quality picture we get to the sound, the sound is only in stereo but since I only have stereo speakers it doesn’t really brother me, the music and the voices are quite sharp and the music comes out quite well, overall its quite good.

Menus

The menus, like the picture, are quite low quality with garish purples and blues taking the theme to a depressive level, the menus are scattered with pictures of Tim’s artwork and some awfully cut clips off the show running when you go to another menu, overall the menus are acceptable but they are too much of a rush job too look good, the sounds are awful and put the arsenic icing on the gunpowder cake.

Extra Features

WOW, this is where the DVD format comes into its own, there are just so many different features on the DVD, these include deleted scenes, trailers, character and actor biographies, subtitles, out takes and the very funny commentary that is present on all 7 episodes, this stuff is a goldmine of information for the avid SPACED fan, the profiles are good, the out takes are funny and the commentary is comic genius, it is also really good to see the deleted scenes and to see what was missing from the show. The extras on this disk are brilliant and even if you only watch the whole series once it will be worth getting for the extra features.

Contents

WOW, this is where it’s at, the whole of the first series, the best in entertainment. I suppose it is just straight off TV but when SPACED is concerned this doesn’t apply. Totally excellent at it’s best, except for Ep 3, that was a bit naff, but otherwise great, I have noting else to say really, as the advert says "you can not be told what spaced it, you just have to watch it."

Overall

What do you want to hear... ok then, this is an excellent DVD of the best series so far, full of excellent features that will delight all, this is a must for all SPACED fans, this is worth buying a DVD player for (I actually did) the only letdown is the poor image quality and the awful menus
