THE HABSBURGS
.

.
The royal Habsburg Family of Europe, one of the oldest and most prominent dynasties from the 15th to the 20th centuries, was named after the family castle of Habsburg, or Habichtsburg ("Hawk's Castle"), which was built in the year 1020 on the Aare River in what is now the Swiss canton of Aargau by Bishop Werner of Strasbourg.  The actual origin of the family is obscure, but Guntram the Rich, who lived about 950 and may have been a Carolingian noble, is considered the earliest traceable ancestor of the House of Habsburg.  Bishop Werner's nephew, also named Werner, became the first count of Habsburg.  He died in 1096.  The Habsburgs came into European prominence with the election of Count Rudolf as the German king and Holy Roman emperor Rudolf I in 1273.  Rudolf greatly increased the power of his house by taking possession of the Babenberg inheritance - i.e., the duchies of Austria, Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola - from King Ottokar II of Bohemia in 1278.  In 1282, he invested his successors with these duchies, which became the hereditary lands and center of the Habsburg domains, identified with Austria, which they ruled without interruption until 1918 as dukes, archdukes, and emperors.

Rudolf's son, Holy Roman Emperor Albert I, was assassinated in 1308, after which the imperial title was denied the Habsburgs for more than a century.  During this period, they continued their earlier policy of acquisition through diplomacy and dynastic marriages with the houses of Bohemia and Hungary.  After Albert II became Holy Roman emperor in 1438, the imperial office remained in Habsburg hands (except for the short period of 1742-1745) until its abolition by Napoleon I in 1806.  After becoming emperor in 1493, Maximilian I, through his shrewd diplomacy and marriage policy, was in a large measure responsible for the establishment of Habsburg domination of European policies during the following four centuries.  His own marriage gained his family the Bourguignon inheritance in the Low Countries; his son Philip's marriage brought Aragón and Castile.  His successor, Charles V, thus inherited Spain and its overseas empire, parts of Italy, the Netherlands, and the Habsburg German and Austrian possessions.  This was the apex of Habsburg power.

On his abdication in 1556, Charles left Spain, the Netherlands, and the Italian domains, as well as the overseas empire, to his son Philip II, while Austria was ruled by Charles's brother, Emperor Ferdinand I, who in 1526 also succeeded to the thrones of Bohemia and Hungary.  As a result, when  Charles died, the House of Habsburg was divided - the Austrian branch retaining the imperial title.  The extinction of the Spanish Habsburg line in 1700 led to the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).  By the Peace of Utrecht (1713) and the treaty of Rastatt (1714), Spain passed from the Habsburgs to the French Bourbons.  The Austrian branch, however, received Spain's Italian possessions (except for Sicily) and also the southern Netherlands.

The male line of the Austrian Habsburgs ended with Charles VI in 1740.  By the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, Charles secured the recognition of the indivisibility of the Habsburg lands and the right of succession of his daughter Maria Theresa.  By her marriage to Duke Francis of Lorraine (later Holy Roman Emperor Francis I) in 1736, she created the house of Habsburg-Lorraine.  Maria Theresa lost most of Silesia to Prussia in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748).  Maria Theresa's grandson, Francis II, was the last Holy Roman emperor.  During his reign, the Habsburg Empire played a leading role in the defense of Europe against revolutionary and Napoleonic France.  In 1804, anticipating the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Francis II assumed the title of Emperor of Austria.  His son, the sickly Ferdinand I, proved incompetent to exercise his office.  During the Revolutions of 1848, which endangered the existence of the multinational Habsburg empire, Ferdinand was compelled to abdicate in favor of his nephew, Francis Joseph.

In the course of Francis Joseph's reign, Austria was forced out of Italy and expelled from Germany in 1866.  The remaining domains of the Habsburgs were reconstructed in 1867 as the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.  Defeat in World War I (1914-1918) led to the final breakup of the Habsburg Empire and the alienation of most of its territory.  The last Habsburg, Emperor Charles I, refused to renounce his own claims and those of his dynasty to their hereditary positions.  The new Austrian republic consequently banished the Habsburgs in 1919.  Charles's two attempts in 1921 to regain his Hungarian throne proved unsuccessful.  He died in exile.

As head of the House of Habsburg, Archduke Otto, Charles's eldest son, petitioned the Austrian government in 1961 to be allowed to return to Austria as a private citizen.  Otto's request was granted in 1963, and he became a resident of West Germany and one of the elected representatives of that country to the European Parliament.

The Austrian Double Eagle (above) was traditionally used to represent the Habsburg royal family.  The Austrian Double Eagle also shows Teutonic crosses and other emblems used to represent the different ethnic groups and regions under Hapsburg dominion.  The sword, orb, and crown are endemic symbols of royal power as decreed by God.  The image of the two-headed eagle represents the geographic location of Austria as the center of Europe - indicating that the Habsburg Empire was sovereign over east and west.

The following is a list of prominant individuals from the House of Habsburg, with brief biographical information and illustrations.  Although titles have been given in English, Christian names usually appear in German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc. depending on the source.  For example, Albrecht appears rather than Albert, and Karl appears rather than Charles.

F

Felix
Third son of Emperor Karl and Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma
Born 31/5/1916 in Schonbrunn

Ferdinand I
Emperor, the younger son of Philipp The Fair, King of Castile and Johanna of Spain
Born 10/3/1503 in Alcala de Henares near Madrid
Died 25/7/1564 in Vienna
Ferdinand I served as Holy Roman Emperor (1558-64), King of Bohemia (1526-64), and King of Germany (1531-64).  The son of Philip I, king of Castile, and Joanna the Mad, queen of Castile, he was born on March 10, 1503, at Alcalá de Henares, Spain.  In 1521, he became governor of the duchy of Württemberg and of the Habsburg hereditary lands, where he sought to check the spread of the Reformation.  When his brother-in-law, King Louis II of Hungary, died in 1526, Ferdinand claimed through his wife the thrones of Bohemia and Hungary.  He was crowned king by the Bohemians early in 1527.  Although crowned almost simultaneously in Hungary, he was rejected there by the nobles, who were led by John I Zápolya and supported by the Turks.  A long series of indecisive wars ensued against the Ottoman Turks and the forces of John I and his son, John II.  A truce finally concluded in 1562 gave Ferdinand sovereignty over a small part of Hungary, for which he was obliged to pay tribute to the Turks.

In 1531, Ferdinand had been elected King of Germany as a reward for his loyalty to his brother, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.  Good relations between the brothers, however, did not continue because Charles reserved the imperial crown for his son Philip, later King Philip II of Spain, instead of for Ferdinand.  Friendly feeling was restored in 1555, largely because Ferdinand successfully arranged the Treaty of Passau in 1552 and the peace of Augsburg in 1555.  On Charles's abdication in 1556 of the Spanish crown, Philip was made King of Spain, while Ferdinand assumed the duties of emperor.  Ferdinand was not crowned, however, until after Charles's formal abdication as emperor in 1558.  Subsequently, Ferdinand attempted to effect a reunion of Roman Catholics and Protestants, but failed because he insisted that bishops retain their secular authority. He died on July 25, 1564, in Vienna.

Ferdinand I
(the Good)
Emperor of Austria, oldest son of Emperor Franz II (I) and Princess Maria Theresia of Naples and Sicily
Born 19/4/1793 in Vienna
Died 29/6/1875 in Prague
Ferdinand I of Austria and Hungary served as Emperor of Austria (1835-48) and King of Hungary (1830-48).  He was the son of Emperor Francis I of Austria, who was also Holy Roman Emperor under the name Francis II.  Ferdinand was completely controlled by the reactionary Austrian statesman Prince Klemens von Metternich.  After the revolutionary outbreak of December 1848 forced Metternich from office, Ferdinand abdicated in favor of his nephew Francis Joseph I.

Ferdinand II
Of Austria-Tyrol, Son of Emperor Ferdinand I and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary
Born 14/6/1529 in Linz
Died 24/1/1595 in Innsbruck

Ferdinand II
Emperor, second son of Archduke Karl II of Inner Austria and Maria of Bavaria
Born 9/9/1578 in Graz
Died 15/2/1637 in Vienna
Ferdinand II served as Holy Roman emperor (1619-1637), King of Bohemia (1617-1619), and King of Hungary (1621-1625).  He was born in Graz, Austria, the grandson of Emperor Ferdinand I, and was educated by Jesuits, from whom he acquired a deep antipathy toward Protestantism.  In 1618, in protest against Ferdinand's efforts to restore Catholicism, Bohemian rebels threw two of Ferdinand's ministers out of a window.  This incident, known as the Defenestration of Prague, was the immediate cause of the Thirty Years' War.  The Bohemians replaced Ferdinand with Frederick V, elector of the Rhenish Palatinate.  As a Habsburg, Ferdinand became Holy Roman Emperor in 1619 and, allied with Bavaria and the Catholic League, defeated the Bohemians at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620.  He deposed Frederick and sent him into exile.  Ferdinand was waging war simultaneously against a force of Hungarian Protestants led by Gabriel Bethlen.  Following his victory, Ferdinand negotiated with Bethlen and secured the title of King of Hungary.  The imperial forces, commanded by the count of Tilly and Albrecht von Wallenstein, were successful in the war against the Protestant forces in Germany in 1625.

By 1627, Ferdinand had outlawed all religions but Roman Catholicism, and had banished the Protestant laity and clergy from Bohemia.  In 1629, the Edict of Restitution empowered the Roman Catholic church to recover all property seized by Protestants since the Treaty of Passau had imposed a religious settlement on Germany in 1552.  The edict, however, alienated some of Ferdinand's allies, and this, together with the assumption of Protestant King Gustav II Adolph of Sweden and the assassination of Wallenstein, weakened the imperial authority.  Although his armies won the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634, Ferdinand was unable to carry out his plan to repress Protestantism throughout the empire. The termination of the Thirty Years' War was left to his son Ferdinand III.

Rudolf I
Roman and German King, oldest son of Count Albrecht IV of Habsburg and Heilwig of Kiburg
Born 1/5/1218
Died 15/7/1291 in Speyer
Considered the founder of the Habsburg dynasty, Rudolf I served as German king and Holy Roman Emperor between 1273 and1291 - the first Habsburg to hold the royal title.  The eldest son of Count Albert IV of Habsburg, Rudolf was born at Limburg im Breisgau.  After the death of his father, he became lord of his family's territories in Alsace, Switzerland, and Swabia.  His election as German king and emperor in 1273 marked the end of the Great Interregnum, a period of more than two decades when Germany was without a leader.  Rudolf's claim to the imperial crown was contested by Alfonso X of Castile and Ottokar II of Bohemia.  Alfonso was induced to withdraw by Pope Gregory X.  In return, Rudolf renounced any claim to authority over Rome or the Papal States.  In 1278 he defeated Ottokar with Hungarian aid at the Battle of Durnkurt, acquiring as a result Austria, Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola.  These territories, previously held by the Bohemian king, became the center of the future Habsburg state.

Rudolf II
Emperor, oldest son of Maximilian II and Infanta Maria

Died 20/1/1612 in Prague
Born in Vienna, the son and successor of Emperor Maximilian II, Rudolf II of Habsburg served as Holy Roman Emperor (1576-1612), King of Hungary (1572-1608), and King of Bohemia (1575-1611).  Rudolf's ability to rule was impaired by frequent fits of insanity and by a passionate interest in science, to which he devoted most of his time.  He was the patron of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and the German astronomer Johannes Kepler.  His sanction of religious persecution aroused bitter discontent, and in 1604 an insurrection broke out in Hungary.  By 1608, Rudolf's brother Matthias had assumed control of both Hungary and Bohemia, and in 1609 Rudolf was compelled to grant a charter of religious liberties to the Bohemians.
