| Letter- All People Have the Same Rights to Live and Love by Amy Hinton November 11, 2003 Dear Editor, Those who perceive things only in black and white do not ever consider the numerous shades of gray. I have Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, which means genetically I am male, but I am physically and psychologically female. In a homophobic "perfect" world, only a union between man and woman is "natural." In reality, for me to be with a male, that would mean this union would be XY/XY(homosexual). On the other hand, if I were to be with a female, the union would be XY/XX. But because society sees and labels me as a female, then I would be labeled as a lesbian and a sinner. Whether one day I fall in love with a male or female is unimportant because it's not about what's between a person's legs but about who they truly are as an individual. It's time to start thinking outside of the box. As an intersex individual, I live in a world of secrecy and oppression. I feel that the secrecy and oppression that is placed on the homosexual community is immoral. No one has the right to judge a person for following their heart. Homosexual people have just as much right to live their lives filled with happiness and love. I feel people have come to the point of judging others who live differently because they are afraid. In reality, the homosexual world has just decided to start living according to their own principles rather than through the judgments of closed-minded society or a book we call the Bible. It's easy to hide behind religion to justify what is perceived as right and wrong. The truth is not everyone believes in the Bible, and they are allowed that freedom. Why is it so hard to allow people the freedom to love? Amy Hinton Junior @Olemiss The Daily Mississippian Email Amy |
