Snake Year Teaching has a historical origin. It goes back to the Great Terton, discoverer of the hidden treasures (Gyalwang Rinchen Phuntsok 1509-1557), who in the surounding area of Trolung Monastery gave empowerment and transmission from (bka-brgyad) and other important Terma teachings in Snake Year and named it Snake Year Teaching. Coincedently the birth year and year of passing away of Gyalwang Rinchen Phuntsok was serpent year. Since that time became a tradition to give these teachings once in a twelve year.
