TO VIEW
Moments before leaving Colorado Springs to head up to the show, I made a quick stop at the OnlineKitchenParty, only to discover the HOME OFFICE had just that very minute posted: "RED ROCKS CANCELLED".  My heart sank.  I called my friend, already in line at Red Rocks.  She had no idea, went up to the ticket counter, and asked if Great Big Sea had cancelled. THEY also had no idea.  After a qucik call to the Promoters, Red Rocks announced the GBS had cancelled.
A group of us from the OKP had arranged to meet up at the show, but instead ditched Big Head Todd and the Monsters for a Carbon Leaf show in Boulder instead!   That was my introduction to
Carbon Leaf, another phenomenal band!
One of our group had been in the Edmonton Airport that morning, and reported that their flight had been cancelled, and there was no way to get "all hands" and ALL the equipment onto another flight that would get them here in time for the show.  It was later said in a newsletter from November '04:
:
Yeah.
I've managed to get to a few shows since then, and am eagerly anticipating
FEBRUARY 19TH, when the B'ys are scheduled to return to Denver, at the Paramount Theater.  Here's hoping for better luck with the travel arrangements!
"A belated apology to our friends in Denver; although there were scenarios where the band could have made that gig, there were none where we could show up accompanied by our instruments, and button accordions and bouzoukis cannot be picked up at Wal-Mart. There was a huge crowd on-hand for the  show, and it sucked not to make it."

The Hard And The Easy is the 8th release from Great Big Sea  (9th if you include Rant & Roar).  Containing no original material by the members of the band, it is a compilation of traditional Newfoundland pieces.  Many of these were compiled decades ago by Gerald S. Doyle and  Kenneth Peacock.in the Newfoundland Songbooks.
"These are the songs we play when we're not working" claims Sean on TH & TE's bonus DVD."They're the ones that usually come out at three in the morning, when the party starts to get serious," says Alan about the tunes on The Hard And The Easy.
The first single released from this album is "
Captain Kidd", a lively song about this famous pirate's treachery.  "River Driver" delivers powerful accapella harmonies and driving rhythms.  The first track, "Come And I Will Sing You" performed by Bob Hallett, is reputed to be one of the oldest known songs in the Newfoundland tradition, going back to Medievil times.  Ancient versions of this counting song can be traced back to Herbrew and Arabic!  Sean's rendition of "Graceful & Charming" is a lovely version of the turn-of-the-century ballad "Sweet Forget me Not".   "Tishialuk Girls Set" is a lively instrumental piece, featuring Bob's many tallents.  Other gems include "French Shore", "Harbour Le Cou",  "Old Polina",  and "The Mermaid". Strangley enough, there are two songs ("Charlie Horse" and "Tickle Cove Pond") with the theme of a horse falling through ice, and the help of good neighbors to remove the animal:
The title of the Album comes from "Tickle Cove Pond":
"The hard and the easy, we take as they come — that's it. That encapsulates the Newfoundland spirit," said Alan.
