PS/2 Model 8551 and 9552IBM PS/2 Note N51 SX (SLC)IBM Thinkpad 720 (720C)The infos shown on this page i have found on several other homepages and threw my own testings. The linux infos i have found during my tryings to install linux I take no responsibility for damages or lost of datas caused threw the infos shown hereIBM PS/2 note N51 SX (SLC) IBM Thinkpad 720 (720C) Links IBM PS/2 note N51 SX (SLC)The infos in brackets are the differences for the N51 SLC!
Diagnostic disc for IBM PS/2 note N51 SX/SLC Display utility for IBM PS/2 note N51 SX Hardware Maintenance Manual Volume 1 MCA Patch for Kernel 2.0.35 Connectors: 1 Serial: (9 - Pin) 1 PS/2 Mouse Port. 1 Parallel Port. 1 VGA connector for a external monitor. 1 Connector for a second serial or a internal modem. 1 Bus connector for a special adapter in which some half length MCA cards could be used. The following cards are supported (out of my german handbook)
Linux and other Systems always detect 2 serial ports even if you have no second port installed! Install notes for LinuxI have used the Kernel 2.0.35!You need ESDI and MCA support in the kernel (For Kernel 2.0.35 there is a MCA-Patch available). The geometry of the harddisk isn't always detected correct. I use the following boot parameter eda=38,32,64 with my 40 MB harddisk. Also reboot=bios is needed to correctly restart. I also have tested it with Kernel 2.2.17 (when booting from a Zip drive). The harddisk is also not detected correct. I haven't checked if the eda setting is working. On my machine Linux allways detects 2 serial ports even if i have only one installed. The Settings for XF86Config looks like this

Install notes for Windows 95I have Windows 95 installed on my laptop. But threw the fact that i only have a 40 MB harddisk i use the following trick. Windows 95is booted from a ZIP disk. On the harddisk there are only the boot things and the dos drivers for the ZIP drive. The Power Management of the n51 is not APM compatible and so not useable under Win95. Install notes for OS/2 WarpNot tested until today but should maybe work. The Handbook says that OS/2 v1.3 works on this machine. Info about QNX 4 Demo diskThe DEMO isn't working on the N51SX. The booting is working but then it is crashing.Info about AIX 1.3For AIX on the N51 at least PTF 0013 ist needed. I don't have this PTF so untestedIBM Thinkpad 720 (720C)The infos in brackets are the differences for the 720C!
Reference disk for IBM Thinkpad 720C Diagnostic disk for IBM Thinkpad 720/720C Option disk for IBM 3550 Docking station PCMCIA driver disk for IBM Thinkpad 720/720C Video driver disk (256 colors) for IBM Thinkpad 720C Video display control for OS/2 for IBM Thinkpad 720C Hardware Maintenance Manual Volume 2 ASPI Driver for SCSI Controller (inside Dockingstation) CDROM Driver for SCSI Controller (Dockingstation) The 240 and 340 MB harddisks were available as a upgrade and seems to have been IDE harddisks with a special adapter. The 520 MB harddisk seems to have been only available in japan.(maybe also a IDE drive ?) From Onsite/Corporate there was a IDE adapter for TP 700/720 available wich could be used with 520 MB, 1 GB (1050 MB) and 2 GB (2100 MB) harddisks. From Sigma Data's there were the following IDE drives available 340MB ,540 MB ,720 MB. This drives used a emulation board so that the drives looked like ESDI drives to the machine. The IDE drives from Onsite and IBM seems to work with linux if you start with ide0=0x5310 parameter. For the 720C there is a VESA driver available. Under http://www.1800batteries.com you still can get batteries for the 720. (Thanks to Stephen Gielow for the info) The special SCSI CDROM driver is needed with the dockingstation or the drive will not work!. Please see here for a closer description http://www.gilanet.com/Ohlandl/misc/CDROM.html Connectors: 1 Serial: (9 - Pin) 1 PS/2 Mouse Port. 1 Parallel Port. 1 VGA connector for a external monitor. 2 PCMCIA slots. (For 1 Type III or 2 Type II cards) 1 Bus connector for a Docking station (3550) or a Port Replicator. The Dockingstation contains a SCSI controller. And has place for one 5.25" device. It also has 2 MCA slots. The SCSI controller is supported by the MCA scsi driver of Linux. The External SCSI Connector of the dock is a 60 Pin Centronics. The same connector is used on so called RS/6000 SCSI cables. Install notes for LinuxI have used the 2.2.18!You need ESDI and MCA support in the kernel. As boot parameters i used the following ones floppy=thinkpad (I have a 160 MB Harddisk. I am not sure if the drive parameters are correct detected but they are also defined in PS2ESDI.C so i think they are okay) I haven't tested to install XFree86 until now. The PCMCIA chipset (Stinger) is identified as a VADEM VG-468. You need the do_scan=0 parameter to not crash when loading the PCMCIA module. Then at least my network card is detected correct. If you want you could also patch directly this kernel (2.4.19) file /linux-2.4.19/drivers/pcmcia/i82365.c There is a line do_scan=1; simply change it to do_scan=0;and it will work Install notes for Windows 95The Installation of Windows 95 works. Only the PCMCIA port is not detected. But if you have installed the DOS drivers for the PCMCIA port you can use WIN 3.x drivers to make use of PCMCIA Network cards. The docking station is detected also the SCSI controller inside. But threw the fact that the ESDI and the SCSI controller share the same INTERRUPT the SCSI device is accesed as a INT 13h device. Install notes for Windows NT 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51Copy ABIOS.SYS and SF8600X.BIO from the Reference Disk to C:\ before you INSTALL Windows NT.Both NT Versions will work but not see the PCMCIA sockets. Install notes for OS/2 Warp v3OS/2 fully supports this Laptop. Even the PCMCIA controller is supported! The following Fix Packs include corrections specially for the 720 (C) XR_W010 or WS_FP1 XR_W031 You can also simply install the latest Fix Pack it includes also the older fixes. Install notes for OS/2 Warp v4Not tested until now but will come one day.Install notes for IBM PC DOS 2000 v7.0The DOS version i have identifies as Dos version 7.0 Revision 1.This version includes PCMCIA drivers. Info about QNX 4 Demo diskThe DEMO isn't working on the TP 720. The booting is working but then it is crashing.Info about AIX 1.3It seems that at least PTF 0013 is needed to use AIX 1.3 on the 720. But i am not sure at least this PTF added support for the Thinkpad 700 to AIX and as the 720 and the 700 are nearly the same. I think this also means it supports the 720.Battery reworked to be a power supplyWhen i got my TP 720 it didn't have the power supply. The Pre Owner has changed a old battery to use it as a power supply. The two wires that came out of the battery where connected to a external power supply. Since i made it to get a original power supply this adapter is not in use anymore. I will upload a wiring plan as soon as i have time. Picture of the patched battery The following cards are working with the TP 720 PCMCIA controller. If you know other cards which are not listed in the Documentation of IBM please inform me.
