Shaded Tails is proud to present to you, the newest additions to our ever growing family. Already you are probably wondering what in the world made us decide to get into breeding ALPACAS. In the summer of 1998, we spoke to our insurance agent who told us about his plan to get involved with these incredible animals. Of course we had never heard of an Alpaca before so we visited a couple of breeders in our area and it was LOVE at first sight !!! These animals have to be the friendliest creatures to ever cross our path. They are a cousin of the Llama but about 1/3 to 1/2 the size, extremely easy to care for and are raised for their luxurious fiber as well as reproduction. There are 2 varieties of Alpaca, the Suri and the Huacaya. The Alpaca comes in 22 natural colors, ranging from pure white, to browns, grays and jet black. Only about 10% of all Alpacas are Suris. They are family pets to many people due to their wonderful personalities. The Alpaca is gentle enough that a child can handle them with great ease.  With a life span of 20 to 25 years, you need to be totally devoted as they will be with you a very long time. Requiring minimum acreage they are perfect for those with small acre properties. Alpacas usually only require a 3 sided Shelter so you can look at the various shelters we found photos of. We thought it was a wonderful way to fill up a portion of our 20 acres. My husband always wanted to do something with the property anyway, now he can.

NEED BARN CAMERA SYSTEMS ?

Alpacas are a great investment opportunity so after hours of research and talking with other breeders, we decided to take the plunge.

The above picture, although he does not belong to us, is what we expect to produce in the future. Alpacas have 1 Cria (baby) per year so it does take time to increase your herd but we are not concerned with that aspect. We just want to enjoy these lovable animals for a very long time.

To make a long story short, we stole our insurance mans idea but I am sure he will forgive us !!! There are some links at the bottom of this page for you to go to to get your questions answered, everything from what is an Alpaca, what is their life span, what are they bred for, Alpaca fiber and investment information. We do NOT profess to be experts by any means as we are just getting started so please take the time to check out these very informative links so you can fully understand our interest in these beautiful animals.

Some of the pictures on this site are NOT my own so I sincerely hope that the owners will take them as a compliment, not theft. We just want to show off the quality of the Alpaca. If you own one of these animals, please email me and I will remove the picture if that is your wish OR I will give credit with a link to your web site.
