1772 Deed by Mark Harford

The following was taken from the Craven County Courthouse in North Carolina. The original was found in book 20 page 66 and 67 of the General Index to Deeds and Mortgages, Craven County, N.C. Pg. 66 & 67.

To all so whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that I Mark HARFORD of the County and Province aforesaid planter for and in consideration of the tender love and affection which I bare to my son in law James BroadWater and Elizabeth his wife and divers other good causes moving me thereunto hath given granted assigned and set over and by these present doth give grant aline convey confirm assign and set over unto the said James BroadWater & Elizabeth his wife and to their heirs of their body forever a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid and on the South side of Bay River and on the head branches of Tillmans Creek on both sides of the main road beginning at a Gum the beginning tree of a Patent Granted to John Carruthers 23rd day of December 1763, and running along the patent line West 32 pole to a white oak, then S 45 W 35 pole to the main road, then along the road S 76 W 43, pole to a Pine, then S 38 E __ pole, then S 75 pole to the back line of the Patent, then along the back line N 75 E 30 pole, then N to another line of the aforesaid patent, then along the patent lines to the beginning, containing fifty acres of land be the same more or less. To have and to hold the aforegranted premises with their and every of their appurtenances and all rights privileges and improvements to so the same in any wise belonging to them the said James BroadWater and Elizabeth his wife and to the Heirs of their body for ever, and the said Mark HARFORD his Heirs, Executors and Administrator, doth further covenant and grant to and with said James BroadWater and Elizabeth his wife and their Heirs Executor, and Administrators from this time forth and forever hereafter hath good Wright, full power and lawful authority to enter into the Premises aforesaid without the ___ trouble Hindrance or Molestation of any person or persons whatsoever claiming or to claim from by or under me the said Mark Harford my Heirs, Executor, Administrators, or assignee , and I the said Mark Harford for myself my Heirs, Executors and Administrators the said demised premises unto the said James Broad Water and Elizabeth his wife & to their Heirs of their body lawfully begotten forever Will Warrant & for ever defend against the claim of all person, whatsoever, in witness whereof I the said Mark Harford and Elizabeth my wife hath here unto set our hand and seals this Sixth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Two.

Then was the aforegoing Deed of Gift proved in open court by the Oath of John Carruthers Esquire one of the subscribing witnesses there to agreeable to Law and Order to be Registered. Test Christ Neales CIC.





1912 Power of Attorney for Harford and Kirk

The following was found in Book 38 pages 372 & 373 of the General Index to Deeds and Mortgages, Craven County, N.C. to Nov.1st 1912. It was listed as a Power of Attorney instrument..

Know all men by these presents that we Sarah Harford and John Harford and Roger Kirk Heirs at law to George Wilcocks deceased all of the County of Craven and State of North Carolina have constituted maid and appointed and by these present do constitute, make and appoint Clement Stubblefield of the State of Tennessee and County of Sumner our true and lawful attorney, for us and in our names & Stead and to his own ___ to ask demand and receive from the Secretary of States a Military land warrant for the service of George Wilcocks late a Corporal in the Continental line of this States of N. Carolina for such Quantity of land as he may appear to be entitled to for said services, giving and granting unto our said attorney by these present our full and whole power strength and authority in and about the _____ to have use and take all lawful ways and means in our names for the obtaining a warrant as aforesaid and upon a receipt thereof acquittances or other sufficient discharges for us and in our names to make seal and deliver and generally, all and every other act and acts things and things in the law what soever needfull & necessary to be done in and about the premises in for as and in our names do execute and perform as fully to all intents & purposes as we might or could do were we present personally. Witness where of we have here unto set our hands & seals this 27th February 1813.

Court of Pleas of Quarter Sessions March Term A.D. 1813. Then was the Execution of the foregoing Power of Attorney proved in open court and in due form of law by the Oath of Caleb Muse and William Lewis the subscribing Witnesses thereto ordered the the said Power of Attorney be registered.
