Date: Wed Apr 04 2001 Time: 16:11:29 As a Davy fan ive had to develop a fairly thick skin, when i first heard people bash him i was devestated but although now i do sometimes feel the need to jump to hes defence i do occasinally agree with whats said, can understand where its coming from and have been known to join in..Ive been told that a 'true fan' would never disrespect the great man or say anything against him..so i'll leave it up to you to decide if im worthy of that honour or not! Dont you ever think that bashing Davy is like shooting fish in a barrel, he does seem to make it very easy for you guys!!Talking of bashing, you know the more i read about 'saintly' Peter the more he annoys the hell out of me. If Davy is 'bitter' monkee surely Peter is 'whiney' monkee, hes seen as some sort of monkee Mary Poppins when all he does is whinge and whine about how tough he had it.Yeah Mike is a complete git but i can overlook this , god i can even forgive Micky for using that 'vulcan' line on every pesky interview he ever does and for hes seriously offensive ponytail he feels the need to sport but Peter just winds me up. He allowed Mike to walk all over him and now drones on about how he wanted one version of that damn 'circle sky' track on the head soundtrack and mike went and put another version on...jeez its been 35 years forget about it Pete! He slags everyone off(especially Mike) and yet hes the nice guy...what gives? Peter was a victim he allowed himself to be walked over and let Mike treat him like dirt, wasn't he the oldest couldn't he stand up to mike when it came to the music. Why didn't he just sock him one? He hit Davy but wouldn't square up to the big monkee would he? Say what you want to about Davy,he wouldn't have let Mike push him around like peter did. Peter's also the most forgettable monkee just ask any non monkee fan to name the guys and the chances are they will be most likely to have trouble remembering Peters name from the four. You know its actually quite enjoyable monkee bashing, something that i could get quite used too. You know i thinkim turning into Davy..bitter and angry, silently plotting my revenge on those who have crossed me...the day i stop outside the window of a musical intrument shop and gaze longingly at a shiney new tambourine is the day i finally cart myself off to the nuthouse..i'll keep you informed!Donatella does me being a Davy fan black box junkie make me the weak link in your chain? Best wishes "Dont hurt me peter fans!" Dawn. "...Never disrespect the great man or say anything against him"?!!! Someone actually told you that? How sad; in other words: stop thinking, and ask no questions. What the fuck is he - god? So, to be a Davy fan you have to rely on your complete faith in the man - that's sick! I don't think you want that honor, Dawn. Sounds like you're really getting into some nice Peter bashing. Peter bashing is a rarity in the Monkee kingdom, and usually frowned upon, but you know you're welcome to bash anyone you want to here. After all, he is a bit annoying - he annoys the shit out of me. And you make a very good point about Pete's temper. Funny how he was able to punch little Davy in the face (which he deserved), but when it came to his real nemesis, Mike was out of his league - I guess Mike scared him. Yeah, I wish Peter would shut the fuck up already, too. There. I said it, I'm now officially Peter bashing. And while I'm at it, you're right about Micky's god damn Vulcan analogy too - god, I hate that. I wish he'd fucking stop that. But the ponytail is gone; I think he cut it off last year. Micky has other problems; he may not say anything bad about other people, but the man is clearly going through early senility. He says things that don't even make any sense (although I'm sure they make perfect sense to him) the Vulcan thing is only one example, but I won't go into some of the others because frankly, I tried to forget them as soon as I heard them. Okay, before I start to Micky bash, which would be a complete sacrilege, let me get back to your post. Why would you be the weak link in my chain? For that matter...what chain? ~Donatella Date: Wed Apr 04 2001 Time: 18:54:46 Okay, I thought about the question that was brought up yesterday. I can only speak for myself. What the fuck is wrong with me? NOTHING!! You know when I first was introduced to the Monkees in 1968 I was six years old. I found them funny and almost like super heros. That was their mass appeal to kids my age. Even at that young age I was musically inclined. I loved the guitar and the drums. So that was another plus for me. By the time I was fourteen, Micky and Davy were almost through touring with Boyce and Hart, and doing some concert dates together. For me my teenage years were not happy ones. Alot was going on with my family. And emotionally for me, that time in my life was extremely rough. Then here they came again...The Monkees, especially Micky, made me happy and took me away from the pain of everyday life. Even if it was for only a half an hour each day.Micky was the clown that put a smile on this sad girls face. Now, twenty fives years later I have grown up into a fine and healthy woman. I no longer see the Monkees as those super heros of yesterday. Instead I see Micky, Mike, Peter, and Davy as real people just like you and me.They have faults and they have good points, too. Well, except for Davy. They are so much more. And that makes them even more appealing to me. My attraction to Mick is his soul. Just look into those wonderful eyes. They are the window to his very being. He is a very sensitive, considerate, kind man.He has a smile, that even at his age still lights up a room. His sense of humor and his personality are warm and real. He works hard and has taken alot of shit for it. They all have. Yes, I do agree with both Dawn and Donatella, he needs to fucking stop it already with the vulcan crap. It is very annoying! We are all very intellegent people who come into the box. The Monkees have in one way or another made us happy. We enjoy them and their music. They have allowed us into their lives to a point. Not too many stars today will do that.We question ourselves for being so into these men...Well there have been few others before them that many women were into. Elvis Presley is a great example. Yes, this man brought alot to the music scene, but he wasn't God.I still remember my mother breaking down and sobbing when he died. Elvis was to her what Micky is to me.But we are lucky. We at least have had the opportunity to come to know these men as one of us. As REAL people. No ladies..There is nothing fucking wrong with us. Not a damn thing! And Dawn Feel free to bash Peter all you want! He is a whiney man!!! The only reason he hit Davy and not Mike was because he knew Mike would have beaten the shit out of him! And it would have been well deserved.Fuzzy Italian Thanks for opening up to us Fuzzy. Only a person with true Italian angst would be able to come into the box and pour out their soul the way you do. Actually, what you said I think is true for many people. What makes that simple lust bind so permanently is some emotional memory that we attach to these people. And you're right, someone like Micky after his hey-day as a Monkee is the perfect down to earth, reachable kind of celebrity that makes the bond stick that much easier. Today, the guys are indeed "real" people, just like everyone else. They don't really enjoy that celebrity status of thirty years ago (except to some of their psycho fans), so for those fans who have been with them from the start, and through their ups and downs, it must make the bond that much stronger. I've always been too fickle to know this first hand, but I've had my share of lusts, loves and obsessions since I was a kid. Everyone needs something to get away from everyday life - for some it's the Monkees; and there's nothing wrong with that, and there's nothing wrong with us, dammit! So there! Well, Micky may be a wonderful, sensitive, considerate person, but we still know he's secretly a whore when it comes to sex! So, I guess that's his flaw (or virtue), and of coarse the Vulcan thing. ~Donatella Date: Wed Apr 04 2001 Time: 21:57:17 That's a very interesting post from fuzzy italian. I'll agree that daydreaming about Micky is a great escape during stressful periods. But I discovered him during a great period in my life! I don't think there's anything wrong with us for lusting after him either, but I've got to tell you, I take an awful lot of grief in the real world for it. Some of the men I know have gone absolutely balistic upon discovering that I'm infatuated with Micky Dolenz. Tom Cruise they could understand, but Micky absolutely baffles them. It's actually pretty funny. I guess men just don't see him the way we do - probably because he's not their ideal of what a "man" should look like. mickchick I'm surprised the men in your life even know who Micky Dolenz is. Do you have to explain it first? Micky is definately not anyones classic ideal man, in fact, none of the guys were, though I guess Micky comes closest. Actually, in many ways Micky isn't that far from Tom Cruise. Hear me out before you all have fits. Tom Cruise isn't perfect by any standard - he's good-looking, but has a rather odd face, especially that nose. And his body is okay, but lacking in height - kind of short and stocky. So, I think it is his little imperfections that people find endearing. Same thing with Micky, or any of the guys - they had their flaws just like Fuzzy Italian said, and that's what endears them to us. ~Donatella Date: Thu Apr 05 2001 Time: 10:25:40 Glad to see so much action in the Box these days! You're right, Donatella, we've finally gotten to the place where we can discuss things like sex, drugs, and rock & roll in an intelligent fashion. I was very impressed with Part 2 of "Blue Notes" as well as Arrowhead's latest contribution - although I have to say that I doubt either Mike or Micky would be willing to forego that kind of mind-blowing sex forever. As for the reasons we find these guys attractive - I think you've covered some of that really well, but I'd also add one more thought. To our eyes, actors and performers from the 1960s seem innocent and unselfconscious compared to the sullen, cynical, self-absorbed whiners we are offered today. The Monkees tv show was done on an inhuman schedule with a miniscule budget, and yet the four stars showed up for work and made it look like it was fun - hell, they actually seemed like they were *having* fun sometimes. I think the same could be said of many TV shows from the 60s, including "Star Trek" - you can tell by watching the episodes that the actors, writers, and crew really had some enthusiasm for what they were doing. Name a TV show today in which the participants look like they want to be there. No matter that the whole idea was a giant hype machine - the guys managed to pull it off with style and humor, and you've got to respect them for that.As for Davy, he's obviously forgotten that he was just an actor in a play. It's too bad that his career was mismanaged and that his personal life has not been fulfilling, but the world owes him nothing. - Lene T. Yes, I have to agree with you on Arrowheads fiction - she definitely needs to write a sequel. After all, Mike and Micky do share a bedroom, just think of the daily temptation. As for your analysis of our lusts, I can't really say much about today's TV shows because I don't watch them. So, I'm kind of in the dark as to why people find these celebrities attractive, but I think you're right about the 60's "seeming" more innocent and unselfconscious - I know that's true for me. The hype machine was more innocent then too. Just look at how blatant they were at their promotion, so to our jaded, sophisticated eye it looks innocent. And the guys did seem to really be having fun, although they were stoned out of their minds half the time, I guess even that has it's appeal. Also, before I forget again, I've been thinking about it, and I want to give my reasons for why I find Micky worthy of my lust. Well, I don't really know - I can't seem to figure it out. Actually, I don't really go for his type at all, so someone help me. What's this guy got that other men apparently lack? Hey, by the way, what are you doing wasting time in the Box when you should be busy writing Part II to that sadistic masterpiece of yours - how long do you think my vibrator can wait? ~Donatella Date: Thu Apr 05 2001 Time: 13:48:24 What does Micky have that other men lack? Good question. I have wondered about that myself. Here's an attempt at an answer. I'll forego a discussion on looks, as we can all agree that that is part of the attraction. I think another big part of it is personality. He's very intelligent, obviously or he wouldn't have had the directing/producing career,(and it comes through in interviews as well) but at the same time, he isn't afraid to act goofy and be honest. He doesn't take himself too seriously. It would be all too easy to get really solemn about his current projects and avoid the Monkee stuff altogether (kind of the way Mike does most of the time.) He doesn't seem to have any illusions about what it all was and what they did and is comfortable with it. You gotta love that. There's also something else that's harder to identify. Maybe a kind of vibe? I definitely understand what mickchick said about other people not getting it. It's not just men. I know plenty of women who would think I had lost my mind if they knew what was in it. I don't worry about explaining it. I just keep it to myself. We all need our little private pleasures. If I had to explain or justify, they'd never understand it anyway. ----Arrowhead Hmmm, I don't really see him as being all that intelligent. I mean, I don't think he's an idiot either, but I think that he thinks he's much more intelligent than he actually is - which in itself is kind of cute. He seems so desperately unaware whenever I see him in interviews - sort of a child-like quality, or the man's just insane. Directing and producing require more of a talent, rather than intellect; it really isn't that hard to do if you have the knack for it; unless of coarse you fall into the category of a brilliant director - which he doesn't. He is very down to earth - I'll give ya' that, and he does seem to have an honesty about him that you don't find in a lot of people in general, never mind celebrities. And then there's something about people who are always smiling that's just nice to be around. He does seem rather happy these days, so the fact that he has made peace with the past (unlike others) suggests he's a gentle soul who doesn't hold a grudge (unlike a certain little troll). So, it looks like we've come up with a pretty good list of favorable attributes. I guess that's good enough for me; not that I feel the need to justify it to anyone else, I just thought I'd like to justify it to myself. Thanks for the help. ~Donatella Date: Thu Apr 05 2001 Time: 15:22:26 A child like quality, that's a good way to describe him. Desperately unaware? Maybe I need to dig my tapes out and have another look, because I haven't caught anything like that. As far as directing and producing requiring talent more than intellect... I think it depends on what it is you're doing. I don't feel obligated to justify anything either, but you know what I mean. ----Arrowhead Okay, maybe I'm overstating, but go dig out the tapes of recent interviews. He has these moments where he either says something completely out of context, or he just doesn't get somthing that was just said to him, and instead of just staying quiet he likes to keep talking as if he understands exactly. Maybe that's it? He just doesn't know when to shut up. I'm almost afraid to watch him in a new interview because he makes me cringe with some of the things that come out of his mouth, but like I said it's kind of endearing. Maybe he's just having acid flashbacks - I don't know. As for the directing, you're right, it depends on what your doing. I don't know what he's doing now, but in the past he hasn't really aimed very high. Then again, I haven't really seen much of his work, I've only read about it, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. ~Donatella Date: Thu Apr 05 2001 Time: 15:42:12 Boy, those nude Monkees pix are sure hard to find. I did, however, turn up this page, which has some interesting drug-related photos, including one that really *is* of Micky toking up: http://monkeelovebadboypics.homestead.com/one.html I'll continue the search for naked Monkees when I'm not working on the next chapter of my fic. - Lene T. Thank you Lene T. We can always count on you to find new and interesting pics, even if they're not nude. I chose a couple to ah...borrow. Oh, thank god you started the next chapter! ~Donatella |

Like Mickchick, I too have encountered some weird feed back from both male and female friends. A few months ago I told my boyfriend that His sister and I and another friend were planning to go to one of Micky's concerts this Summer. At first the look on his face was one of excitement. He thought that was cool. He also grew up with the Monkees. But, then I told him what I would love to do to Micky ( fuck his brains out! )and he looked at me and seriously asked me the question - He's gay isn't he? Has he been wandering thru the Blue Room?!? What can you expect his name is David! That say's it all. But he's not a bitter little troll. No he's a fucking whore behind close doors! He thinks he's a big macho man. His ass belongs in the Blue Room! Anyway, My bosses son is the same way. He's about six years younger than me. I'll be listening to a Monkees CD and there he goes. He'll start to sing along with the song and then make some snide comment. It's the same for my female friends. I think they all like the Monkees, they're just afraid to admit it. It's not cool to like them. We're too old for that. Ahh, they can all go to hell! We on the other hand don't give a shit about what people think. I myself only answer to only two people....To God and myself. Everyone else can kiss my ass. If they don't like it. I also know what you mean about Micky and interviews. I think that he is really just so damn bored with the whole process that he doesn't give a shit what he says. Lets face it how many different ways and how many times can you explain your experience about the same thing. After awhile you just go blah, blah, blah! I remember seeing him on the VH1 Behind The Music Anniversary Special. He slammed Rick Springfield into a wall. Not physically, although I he had. I'm not a Rick Springfield fan. Rick had just been arrested for suspected spousel abuse. When asked what they had going on Mick said something about Rick was going to be indicted. He got some jeers for that remark. But hell we all were thinking it. I know I was. Mick needs to go on a sex show and discuss his ways of being a whore. Maybe that would liven his interviews up a bit. I know I would have my face right up to my television set! Fuzzy Italian Maybe you should send your girlfriends to the Black Box for some adult-style Monkees. The Monkees reached their plateau of uncoolness a few years ago - that's what makes them cool to like now. I live in a pretty hip neighborhood, and when I visit some very hip bars and restaurants lately I actually hear them play the Monkees. The first time this happened was about a year ago when I was walking through the east village. I passed one of my favorite outdoor cafe's and almost tripped on my own feet when I heard "Saturday's Child" blasting from the speakers. I do wonder who or what exactly do these girlfriends of yours think is cool. If they're just following the media hype machine, then it probably isn't as cool as they think. I saw that VH1 special you mentioned, and I think that was one of Mick's better appearances - at least he didn't make me cringe. I thought the remark about Sprinfield was almost clever, and at least his timing was on. Who wouldn't want to see Micky on a sex show discussing his sexual past, but we'll probably have to wait a while for that one. ~Donatella |
