Haworth Dog Park

We would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their Pre-Applications and to inform you of the progress and status of the Haworth Dog Park Committee. We of course welcome other residents who want to join the effort. Pre-applications are available at borough hall.
The initial survey in November 2007, mailed to all registered dog owners at that time yielded an impressive response. This led to the formation of the Haworth Dog Park Committee by Mayor DiRienzo in January 2008.
The Committee has been actively meeting and has accomplished a great deal. Potential sites were evaluated with consideration of such criteria as drainage, environmental impact, proximity to residences, parking, accessibility and safety. Consultation with the Borough Engineer, and an inspection by tree expert and park planner, William Cromley, resulted in selecting a site on Massachusetts Ave in the proximity of Grant Street.  An exact location is yet to be determined.
We have gathered an abundance of information regarding the construction of dog parks utilizing County and Municipal Parks, private dog parks and expert suggestions as models. Rules and Regulations have been refined and are ready for approval. Our participation at the Flea Market in May proved to be an ideal opportunity to chat with residents, answer questions and clarify issues.

Invitations were mailed for a casual “meet and greet” evening in late June. Unfortunately, only one applicant attended. While there was a good exchange of suggestions and ideas, we concluded that we should delay further meetings until more people could attend. Now that the summer is over, we will be able to resume the effort to engage residents to share their ideas and interest in the park.
Currently, we have received 53 pre-applications, a number which is short of our expectations (there are over 200 registered dogs.) Since this is a self-funded project, the membership level is crucial in determining the size and costs of the park. Your involvement is what will enable us to move forward, so spread the word, tell your neighbors to pick up a pre-application at borough hall and visit our web site. Feel free to email us with suggestions and ideas. A good response to our future communications will ensure that the park will soon be a reality.
