Dillingham Airfield is located near the western most point on Oahu, Kaena Point.  Currently it is a joint-use airport owned by the US Army but operated by the State of Hawaii, Airports Division.  A few times a year the Army takes control of the airfield and the training area where the former ramp and revetment area are.  A temporary tower is established and operations are conducted.  Dillingham is one of the most exciting and dynamic airports in Hawaii.  On a busy day glider, powered aircraft, and parachute operations are conducted at the airport simultaneously- it gets very exciting.  If you are interested in more technical, aviation oriented information, about Dillingham Field (HDH) click here for AirNav's airport data.

History

It is not clear when Dillingham was first used as a landing area.  During World War II, like all the other airports on Oahu, the airfield was expanded and an Air Force Base was established.  Dillingham, like Haleiwa, was used by units based at Wheeler AFB as a satellite field.  The air force base had two runways, 8/26 and the now abandoned 4/22.  Following the war Dillingham retained its AFB status briefly before being slowly fading from importance.  During the height of the cold war a NIKE missile site was established at Dillingham much like the one at Bellows AFB in Waimanalo.  Near Dillingham is the site of a former WWII radar facility at Kaena Point. .  Pictures of the radar facility will be added to this page in the future.   More information about the airfield will be added when it becomes available.
