ChiangMai Guide - Provide Guide and Chiang Mai Festival On November By ChiangMai local Tour Guide " LOY KARTHONG FESTIVAL " LOY KARTHONG IS A HAPPY THAI FESTIVAL. IT HAPPENS ON THE NIGHT OF THE FULL MOON IN NOVEMBER,[THE THAI 12Th MONTH OF THE LUNAR CALENDAR] TOWARD THE END OF THE RAINY SEASON. AT THIS TIME THE RIVERS AND ANNALS ARE USUALLY FULL OF WATER . MANY THAI PEOPLE MAKE FLOATS OR KRATHONG AND PUT THEM IN THE RIVER ON THE EVENING OF THE DAY. MOST OF THEM CONTAIN INCENSE STICKS, A LIGHTED CANDLE, SOME FLOWER, AND PERHAPS A COIN OR TWO. IN CHIANG MAI , THERE IS A FLOAT PARADE AND A FLOAT CONTEST THAT NIGHT. OLDER PEOPLE USUALLY GO TO THE TEMPLES FOR RELIGIOUS RITES AND THE YOUNGER PEOPLE ENJOY GOING TO SEE THE FESTIVAL ON THE BANK OF THE PING RIVER. THERE ARE ALSO CONTESTS OF FIREWORKS AND LANTERNS AND A BEAUTY QUEEN CONTEST CALLED "NANG-NOPA-MAS" CONTEST. IT IS A PLEASANT AND BEAUTIFUL SIGHT TO WATCH THE LIGHT GO FLOATING DOWN THE RIVER IN THE DARKNESS. Other of Activity On the night of the full moon of the twelfth month when water is plentiful Wan phen deung sib song nam koh nong tem ta ling is the song greeting the Loy Kratong Festival of mid-November. This ancient lunar festival, dancing to the Sukhothai period, honors the sparkling waters of Thailand rivers and streams. Thai women spend hours preparing beautiful offerings to the spirits of the waters. Called Kratong, these are made a small boat, cut from the trunk of the banana tree, that is decorated with colorful flowers-orchids, African Marigold and roses and banana leaves cut into decorative shapes. A candle and three sticks of fragrant incense are devoutly placed into the kratong`s center, and occasionally, money is added in the hope that this gift will find its way to the spirits of one `s ancestors. On the evening of 22nd November; as Thais have since olden days, candles and incense will be lit and the kratong placed in flowing water. This ancient and dazzling ceremony of water and fire is performed to ask forgiveness for consuming and abusing water. The kratong also carries away bad feelings, and pays homage to the water spirits for providing water for all our daily needs. The custom is based on deep-rooted animistic beliefs and goes back to the worship of Nature Nowadays the festival also has a less serious side, giving young people an occasion to party to the early hours and to set off fireworks. Their elders hold dinner parties, and Bangkok riverside hotels take advantage of this special evening to draw in the crowds. Old as this festival is, it has very real modern-day meaning, as our precious natural resources become scarce and polluted. The lovely event is a valuable reminder of our place in the natural cycle and our dependence on Nature gifts. |
